Great series. Thanks for sharing.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.

Yes, I did use 1.4 TC. I was quite sure that 400 alone on the 1d would be only good for close encounters, but not good enough for distances at Conowingo ;)
I prefer not to use TC with my copy of ef400 5.6, due to loss of sharpness. IMHO they don't
like each other

I guess the 5.6 is just a little too slow and a DO lens would give better results with a TC I think. Were you pretty far away though? I am sitting on a bit of cash right now and keep toying with getting a 1D4 but I just do not shoot much anymore since where I live now is not really that great for it as compared to where I was before that had a ton of birds just outside since I was right up against a canyon and hillside with lots of trees and areas where the birds like to be. If I find myself a good place to go I will likely buy one. I just hate driving far to places where others say it is great and I get skunked. So I have been lazy for months when it comes to finding a good area. The other thing is I always seem to see Hawks perched on light post along side the free way but only when I do not have my camera. Happened on Sundaywhere one was sitting on top of a Pine tree on the off ramp. They love freeways for some reason.

Yes, agree with you on 5.6 being slow and addition of TC makes it even worse.
However, with good light this combo is still able to produce good results. I had ISO set on 1600 wich I think helped most with capturing fast action of the flying bird.
I bought my 1dIV almost a year ago and I don't regret it. It is wonderful camera, but I will sell it next day after I get (rumored) 7d mkII ;-)a
Of course I'm betting on new AF implemented into it, and hoping it will retain 1.6 crop factor.
5.6 lens would have to go as well, I'm eyeing 500 or 600 f4 for quite some time :-)
