I have a 580EXII and it will not fire. It fired once, then wouldn't fire for any shots after that. The red pilot light is on, there is power, but I noticed when I zoom it also is not zooming in ETTL. I tried switching to manual and it still will not fire....

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

Sounds like it's have a contact issue. Have you tried cleaning them? Also curious, what camera?

Does the flash fire each time you press the pilot button (when it's red), or intermittently?

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

Will it fire when you press the flash test button? Replace the batteries and test again. Bad batteries are the source of most flash problems.

What's the best way to clean the contacts safely? I have a 5dmkII. I took the flash off, then put it back on again and it was fine. Seems to happen when I move the head 90 degrees or straight up.

Could be a wire issue inside the flash too. They twist when you aim the flash in different directions.
