it's gone stealth. don't worry about it, it does nothing for IQ.

I realize that....it's not what I'm asking.
Thanks.

I have read in the past that the replacement part was over $100 or so?

I remember that there was a lot of complaining about the cost for something so minor but it was what it was....

And all other instances I have ever read about the red ring breaking were also with the 24-105. So you are not the first.

Thanks for all the responses....including the "humorous" ones!
However, I think what I am trying to determine is whether or not it literally pays to have it repaired. That is, does it have to be sent back to Canon and how much do they (or anyone!) charge for the repair. Trying to weigh whether it is worthwhile to fix.
Of course, it won't make a difference if I just decide to keep it...it doesn't matter to me when I'm using it. Just for the overall value, so to speak.

Leaving it off may make your stuff slightly less targeted by thieves...

It's worthless now. Luckily I pay cash for junk lenses. I'll give you $20.

Anybody ever had the red ring on an L-lens come off?
I went to pick up my 24-105 from the shelf yesterday...haven't used it in weeks. As I did, the ring came off. Looks like it cracked and split apart somehow.
Is it worth it to get it repaired? Where and how?
Thanks.

does this mean is a knock-off???

Had the same thing happen to my 100 L. Broken lens ID band as well. Anyway, sent it to Canon repair under my CPS Gold 30% discount. The end price was something like $132. Apparently the entire filter assembly needs to be replaced (or at least that is what they did).

So you can figure from there.
