We also have some recent shots from the Nikon P510 btw... Our latest blog article contains links to more early images from both these cameras.

Impressive results, are these edited RAW or JPEG shots? I assume you used a tripod as well?

Are any of these full zoom?

Beautiful shots, I especially like the titmouse.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Beautiful shots, I especially like the titmouse.

This first batch were all shot in Manual mode as jpegs using what Canon calls "Fine" compression (12mp/@2MB). All were set to reduced in-camera processing (NR-1, Sharp-1, Sat-1, Cntr-1), and post-processed in Photoshop. We've since set the compression to "Super Fine" (12mp/@4MB), and will experiment with further reducing in-cam processing to see if IQ can be improved. I may need to upgrade LR/ACR to process RAW.

#1,3,5,6,7(8) were shot at maximum optical zoom (1200mm) ISO100.
#2 was shot at 625mm ISO 320.
#4 was shot full-reach plus 1.2x Digital Zoom (1440mm).
All were hand-held.

Hope this is helpful to someone, and thanks again to all for commenting.

Very impressive set, Kenn. You and Temple really do know how to shoot with these cameras.
As you know I shoot mostly city birds and for that I always use my 300mm. The 400mm is only used a few times a year when I leave the city but then it's almost always too short. So I'm kind of playing with the idea of maybe selling the 400 and buying one of these instead. Any thoughts maybe?

Levina I hear you on the length of these camera's reach!

I would like to know how they do when shooting at distance.
Say 50 feet. 16 meters or so. Also at that range how do they take a crop. say 50%.

I see the titmouse looks great at a 60% crop but how far are these photos shot at?
if shooting from 15 feet away massive crops are easily manageable.

These cameras keep impressing me more and more. Kenn does a great job with them for sure.
I just have to know how they work at distance. Maybe I should borrow my uncle's that I talked him into buying. :p

OP, don't mean to threadjack here, but to answer this question, here is a shot (shot in RAW, PP in DPP, then cropped) of a heron with the SX50HS from oh, a couple hundred feet or so from my deck of my condo to the pond across the street from it. At 1200mm optical zoom...
