Thanks for the info.

Well since I noticed the RRS plates have a threaded hold in them I may go that route. How long of a plate do I need? The one suggested by RRS on their website is the MPR-113 but is 4.4" long. I'm sure I could purchase the MPR-1which is 6" long and it would fit. Do I really need that extra 1.6"? Or will it balance fine on the wimberley with the shorter one?

Why wouldn't you use the Wimberley on your monopod?

I can't speak for the 500 F4 (as I don't have one) but I find my 600 F4 difficult (though far from impossible) to manage on a mono pod. I have tried the 600 with my Wimberley 2 on a mono pod and found it even more top heavy, however with the considerably lighter 500 it should be reasonably manageable and greatly increase versatility.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Can't say I've paid much attention as far as how long my plate needs to be, but I'd error on the safe side. I'm using a 6 inch plate and there is a bit of travel that needs to take place for balance, if you place a couple of teleconverters on your 500mm. Might as well cover the bases for a few extra bucks.

I wasn't to worried about the price difference, but I thought there's no reason for it being longer than it needs to be. I do have teleconverters so maybe I should just get the longer one as you said to be safe.

Ya think I'll stick with RRS. Found out the threaded hole in the plates are 1/4" which still would work with my monopod. Guess I'll just have to decide on the foot or plate.
