Tamron 28-300 VC on a 5D2 or 5D3 experience?

I have seen a lot of confusing information about the Tamron 28-300 VC... some who have it seem to say it does well, and many who don't immediately jump in with "you might as well by a Rebel" type answers. I would like to get some experience from people that have actually use the lens on a 5D2 or 5D3.

I am trying to thin down my kit a bit, and after just buying a 5D3, I have on the shelf a 50D with Canon 18-200IS. I've also got a lot of L glass, including the 24-105, 24-70, 70-200, etc.. I use the 50D with that lens a lot as a carry around camera if we are going to the zoo, going to a family gathering, going on the boat, etc.. I don't want to haul around a bag of gear, and I don't want to be changing lenses on the boat when switching from close ups in the boat, to a bird, or to a wakeboarder. Plus, I'm not even usually operating the camera. The shots we get with the 50D combo are light years ahead of the iPhones or point and shoots. Are they L quality, heck no. But they are good for what we use them for... posting on Facebook or printing a 4x6 for the scrapbook.

I could certainly keep the 50D combo around for this purpose, but I'd really like to have the other benefits of the 5D3, and I'd like to cut down on the amount of stuff I have. If the 28-300 VC on a 5D3 can produce similar quality as the 18-200 IS on 50D, then I'd be happy.

Thoughts?

I had a Tamron 28-300 VC but I sold it before I got my 5D2. I used it on a T2i (550D) and was very pleased with the results from that. The only reason I sold it was that I got a 100-400 L and a 24-105 L so I never ended up using the Tamron. I wouldn't mind trying another now I've got a 5D3 to see if I can get a good all rounder.

Thanks modchild.. I was kind of surprised by that review link I added. I've been to one of Dave's seminars and he's a seriously accomplished wedding photographer, so shocked that he liked using it for weddings. I'm still debating it... adding a 70-300 to the kit, or buying this instead.

Went to the link. I feel kind of strange then I look at provided cropped pictures.
The wedding photog tells - good optical quality, I see - terrible IQ.
The wedding photog tells - CA not a problem after PP in LR, I see - nothing was fixed at all.

Close up for night shoot of three - total crap killed by NR and over sharpening with noise in the black.

Last thing to learn from this guy is gear and PP, IMO.

i don't see the amazing image quality he's talking about...a lot of his pictures are quite soft...

i'm sure it'd work for facebook/4X6's if that's all you're after...but then again as even you say a rebel can give you that...

I had kind of the same reaction on the review in the link, but as I said I've met the guy and he isn't a lightweight. Not sure why he would have given it high marks if it stunk... and its hard to totally assess his position from just looking at the images in his blog. I believe is point was that in prints its fine. His larger crops were all a little soft to me, but the full sized images looked fine.

(by the way, the session I went to that he did focussed quite a bit on using speedlites creatively... basically how to get good results without hauling around studio lighting)

I didn't want to get the question derailed by the review... I still wanted to try and find anyone that has actually taken a chance on this and used it.

I am curious, it has been a few months since you posted. Did you buy that Tamron lens in the end or go with something different. I have that lens, I got it used for a good price. At least compared to the Canon version of the L lens, it was dirt cheap.

In my mind it depends on what you use the lens for. It a travel lens, then it works. But if you want to do anything more professional, like portraits, you might feel it is a bit soft.

I really need to give the lens a good test. On my 5D3 the focusing is fast compared to my 60D. The 5D3 is so much better than most cameras I have handled on so many levels. I haven't tried the 6D though.

If you want to see some pictures with it, I have gone to flickr looking for Tamron 28-300 groups and looked there. Or you can take a look at the lasted post on my website (www.foylefamily.com (external link)). I still think it is a little soft. But see for yourself.

I am interested in what you decided to do.
