So, one would assume that using PSE 11 would be pretty straight forward having experience with CS5 and PSE 9. However, in just a few minutes, Ive run into some really WTF moments. Firstly, I use elements to edit snapshots because it runs faster on my computer and I dont really need CS5 for the small stuff Im doing. Anyway, when you resize an image, there is no option to select pixels. Meaning, you cant resize to 900 pixels on the long side by just typing 900 into the box. WTF?

I don't have Elements, but could you post a screen shot of your Image Size dialog?

It's exactly the same in CS5.

Shane, would you recommend Elements as a primary editing tool? I'm only using ioPhoto now and want a few extra features. I saw CS-6 in use at a workshop and the instructor recommended Elements. Huge learning curve?

Hey Nordwil. Elements does 95 percent of what I use in editing. Most likely, you wouldnt miss anything that CS5 or 6 has for a good while. The only things I would miss are a few of the channels, curves adjustment layers (which you can get all of through elements + add ons) and the patch and pen tool.

So, yes, Elements is a great editing tool. :D

Take a look at this blog post over on The Ski Report (Matt Kloskowski). Might answer some of your questions:

I just upgraded from Elements 9 to Elements 11 and couldn't be happier. Lightroom is still my primary tool, but for layers, masks, and complex selections (especially now that Refine Edge is included), Elements 11 is great.

And if you do decide to pull the trigger, give Amazon a check out. They currently have PSE 11 for 49.99 (normally 99.99).

I picked it up, and only had to use my wife's laptop to share the optical drive to install it on my Air.

Thanks! I actually DID pick it up for the sale price. Not sure which route I'll go yet, but I have iPhoto, Aperture 3 and now Elements in the toolbox. It seems iPhoto/Aperture work well together, although I haven't studied Aperture enough yet to know. It'll take time to become comfortable with the new programs, but I'm sure once I do I'll have most od what I need for my limited PP work.

Elements will do things that neither iPhoto nor Aperture can do, since it has a very full-featured "image editor" that includes a lot of features inherited from the "standard" Photoshop CSx.

Aperture can process Raw files/photos with many more capabilities there than Elements has. iPhoto is not a Raw processor.

So, if you have Aperture on board, then I'd suggest the combination of Aperture (if you shoot Raw) and Elements for editing on the pixel level.

I know that people use iPhoto to collect and organize photos. Aperture, I believe has some basic organizing tools as well, but Elements has an Organizer built in that is pretty "user friendly". In short, if you have Aperture and Elements, there may be no practical use for iPhoto at all.

Thanks for the info Tony! I believe I will basically do as you suggest. I'm finally taking the initiative to actually learn Aperture and Elements. I'll eliminate the elements organizer, since it essentially duplicated the iPhoto library and used up valuable hard drive space, but will start the editing process with either iPhoto or Aperture, then bring Elements into play when needed. It's easy enough to import a file from the iPhoto library into Elements, and if the shared library between Aperture and iPhoto gives me similar categorizing abilities to the Elements organizer, which I believe it does, I'll save on space.
In time I may find I'm not using iPhoto at all and can make the jump then.
