I am considering this lens. It would be for shooting Surf, and moto-x type stuff if I get it. Would this be a good choice. Most of the time when the surf is up around where I live, it is overcast. Will this lens work good in lower light? And also, will it work with a 1.4 or 2.0 TC? Thanks for the advice.

It's a great lens with goos available light, personally i have no trouble in overcast days but it can hunt in dark shade or less than ideal lighting situations. I use the Kenko Pro 1.4 teleconverter with good results and very little loss of quality, but the AF isn't as fast. Again in good lighting it works well. Personally i think it might be a little slow for action shots on overcast days. Have you looked into the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8?

Action, low light, you need a larger maximum aperture. Look at the 85 f/1.8, 100 f/2, 135 f/2, 200 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8.

not remotely long enough for surfing (might work if you're out on a boat). I suggest you go try to shoot some surfers with your 75-300, and see if that focal length works for you. Unless the break is really close in, you're going to need more. I use a 300mm f4 with a 1.4x tcon, and crop down to 1/4 of each shot.

As for aperature, if you're shooting at dawn/dusk or on cloudy days, your surf photos will be dingy gray rather than bright colored, no matter what lens you use.

A sigma 50-500MM might help. I'm not sure of it's price though.

I should have mentioned I live on Florida's Gulf Coast. The waves are only shorebreak realy. We don't have any breaks that are too far out. I have shot some surf shots with the 75-300 allready. It does an allright job. I have heard that putting a TC on the 75-300 doesn't work very well, any thoughts on this from y'all? I don't realy want to spend the money on a new lens right now, but I am doing research for the future.

I wouldn't go with the f/4, especially if you plan on using a tcon. If the f/2.8 is out of your range, look into the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. Image quality is comparable and they can be had new for around $750 or used from $6-700. Add a 2x tcon and you have 400mm f/5.6
