Would you sell 24-70 2.8 & 24-105 IS to buy 24-70 2.8 II

So I've got two lens that are somewhat redundant, other than the handling and with of one is why I don't use it that much. I just bought a 5D3, and hearing the great things about the new II lenses. Since the handling and weight of the 24-70 II is much better, I'm thinking I might sell the two I have and upgrade to the new 24-70 2.8 II. Will give me a smaller kit, and probably sharper images. With the 5D3, I am not as likely to need the IS of the 24-105. Thoughts? Anyone else thought about this or done it? I see a lot of people have both these lenses in their kit.

For me it comes down to how much you value IS in the 24-105. I really like the 24-105 as a travel lens. Plenty of times, I'd shoot with it one handed while eating ice cream with the other. I've been pretty happy with the snap shots I've made.

I've rented both the 24-70 mk I and Tamron 24-70 at the same time for a week. I was all set on buying the Tamron 24-70 because I found it optically to be on par or better than the Canon mk I and had decent image stabilization. Not sure if the Tamron would hold up as well as the mk I in the rain for 45 minutes, but, I think the pros out weighs the cons.

I pulled the trigger on the 24-70 mk II for the better optics, slightly faster AF, and the fact I plan on using this lens for a very long time. It also doesn't hurt that with it, I got two of the three f/2.8 L zooms.

So in short, I personally believe trading the 24-70 mk I and 24-105 for a 24-70 mk II to make a lot of sense.

Others could make an argument in favor of the 24-70/4L IS, but, the more I use my 24-70/2.8L II, the more I don't think about IS. My 24-105 is getting more use on my 5D2 when I loan out that combination to friends. It also helps that I got a micro-four thirds setup that I'm using more and more for casual vacation travel.

If you have a sharp copy of the MKI, no. If it is not, then yes. Or go for the Tamron OS.

if you like your 24-70 and use it more often, then yes, sell both. If you favor the 24-105, then keep it. No amount of magic can make up for stabilization.

plan C would be to sell the one you least use and call it a day.

I'd keep the 24-105 as it's a versatile lens for a walkaround. I'd just sell the Mk I and get the Mk II.

How sharp is ur brick? How much usage does the 24-105 got used?

Thanks for all the comments... let me provide a little more info. First, I hadn't considered the Tamron so need to look into that one. It seems that people like it.

Between the 24-105 and 24-70, I use the 24-105 more often, but mainly because it was lighter and had a little more reach. I never really cared for the strangeness of the 24-70... just a big, heavy and awkward lens to me. The lens I have been using 90% of the time as a walk around was... not one of my Ls... but rather an 18-200 IS on a 50D. I've now sold the 50D and only have a full frame camera. I am debating picking up a cheap Tamron 28-300 VC as a replacement, but not done it yet. In an L discussion, I'm sure no one will be in favor of that, but reading the review on it by folks on FM... it does appear its not a horrible lens if you know what you are getting.

But I still want a good L for when I am more focussed on shooting quality images, than on just having fun with life and grabbing opportunity shots.

Another consideration is that my move to the 5D3 is also for sports. I am giving up my 1D3. I shoot a lot of indoor sports in horrible light, and have been using primes almost exclusively... 50, 85, 135, and the wonderful 200 1.8. By going to the 5D3 and gaining at least 1 stop, I am planning to try shooting with 2.8 zooms instead of 2.0 primes... and that would mean the 24-70 and 70-200. With the 24-70 II being lighter and faster AF... that would serve me well there too. I am seriously thinking of trading up my 70-200 to a 70-200 II also. I would then probably keep a TC1.4 on the 200 1.8 all the time to give me a longer alternative for full frame. But I would be able to do most things with the two 2.8 zooms.

So all this and don't feel I'm getting closer to a decision. Does anyone know how the Tamron 24-70 performs in AF compared to the Canon I or II?

I would not get rid of my 24-105. its fairly light weight and the IS does help a lot, as someone said when you are walking around taking snapshots. For the $750 or so you would get for the 24-105, I'd save longer and have both.

If I had both my current 24-70 "Mark I" and a 24-105 (which I don't have), I'd definitely sell them both and get the 24-70 Mark II.... Especially seeing how we both have 70-200mm lenses, too.

For a walk-around lens, if you want one, check out your local Craigslist for a 28-135 IS. As far as IQ is concerned, it's largely equal to the 24-105, but can be found for as little as $200-250 lightly used. It's also fast and close focusing. And as an EF lens it will work on any Canon cropper or FF camera. The main difference between the 28-135 and the Ls is build quality and dust sealing. But for the money, it's a steal and a good walk-around choice.

I'll have to give the 28-135 a look too as a cheap walker.

my 8 yr old uses the 28-135is and its still working so its not only a great walk around lens.. its a tough one.

Wow, 100% absolutely would I sell those two for the 24-70 II! SO much better than the 24-105! The AF is amazing on it too, especially with a 5D3 where it uses the ultra-precision focus, I've literally had it hit 100 shots in a row in focus at f/2.8 with the 5D3+24-70 II combo in indoor lighting!

The 24-70 II is great for landscapes, portraits, very wide angle sports, walk-around, etc.

The difference between 24-105 and 24-70 II for overall IQ is startling - I rented both a couple weeks back. I would make that swap in a heartbeat.
