So my daughter's 12th birthday party is this weekend, and we were going to have a pool party (Florida), but it looks like that isn't going to happen. So, since my daughter likes to 'model' for me, and I sort of know what I'm doing, we decided we would have a Modeling Party. I have been able to get a local hair/MUA to come and glamour-ize the girls, so it should be fun, and they'll feel like a 12 year old girl wants to feel - 'grown up'.

So I need some advice on doing this regarding lighting and what-not. I have 2 lightstands, one lighting boom, 2 constant lights, 3 umbrellas, x flashes, but only 2 remote triggers. We will probably do this in the backyard, so electricity wouldn't be a problem there, but we may go up to the park, in which electricity would be a problem.

Would you guys go with the constant light or the flash? I'm thinking constant on the stands with a flash on the boom for rim light. Since I'm not usually a portrait photographer (been trying to learn), I kind of think the constant lighting will be best, so I can see what I'll get without too much chimping.

This is scheduled for... 2-3pm (argh), so natural lighting won't be the best, but probably doable.

Advice... please... ?

Always flash, even more so outdoors. Keep it simple really. I would do two lights one key and one fill, use the sun as a backlight over their shoulders. And most importantly have a number of other adults around and inform the other parents what you are doing as this could come off creepy if not properly communicated.

+1. Make sure and adequately communicate with the parents so nothing gets misconstrued. Also have plenty of chaperones.

Oh yeah, without a doubt. I've already spoken to all but two of the parents, and everyone is on board with it. Including my wife and I there will be about 7 other adults, and we already know most of the parents.

So that 2/2 on flash. Thanks!

If the MUA wanted a copy or two, would I need a model release signed by the parents? Pretty sure I would.

Unless it were to be used for a commercial purpose you would probably be okay without a release. But its so little trouble to get one you might as well have it.

I reckon to be on the safe side, yes, but insist on the release form that no photos will be used for commercial usage, just to say that they were present and nothing untoward happened

If you're going to provide the other parents with files, I'd have "Print Licenses" on hand for them to take with so they don't get jammed up over "professional images" and not being able to have them printed elsewhere.

Good idea Jay. Now, does anyone have a link to the releases? :)

You just need to print something up that says, "I'm the photographer & give permission to ... to print the images."
Maybe put a .pdf on the CD, too.

Agree...the fact that the makeup artist wants a copy or two is self evident of the probable commercial use of the photo by him/her in promoting their own makeup services!
As you yourself are not interested in promoting yourself as a photographer, I would insist that the makup artist obtain signed permission from parents for their daughters photos to be used by the makeup artist to promote herself -- and that such written permissions also state the photographer's own lack of intention to ever use the photos commercially to cover your own *ss.
And give the makeup artists YOUR permission to use your photos only to promote his/her makeup business and no other commercial use or sale of rights.
