I have the opportunity to purchase a 2nd hand but mint condition 1d mkiv for $3300.

I currently have a 7d (gripped) and an Olympus E520 plus an assortment of lenses to suit.

Unfortunately some of my favourite lenses for the 7d such as the Canon 17-55 f2.8 and Sigma 8-16 f4.5-5.6 wont fit the 1d mkiv which in turn means I would also have to buy a couple of additional lenses to suit. If I do buy the 1d mkiv I would most likely get the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 & Sigma 10-20 f3.5 lenses for that body. The two extra lenses would add about another $1000 on top of the $3300 for the camera body.

At the moment I am trying to decide whether to commit to the purchase of the 1d mkiv or not. (Another incentive is that I am heading to Hawaii in 3 weeks time, and as such qualify for a 10% duty reduction of the total purchase price as all gear would be bought from a retail store)

I know the 1d mkiv has superior weather sealing over the 7d, higher iso and better noise control, supposedly better AF functionality, an extra 2 frames per second but what other improved qualities would I expect to find when comparing the 1d mkiv to the 7d?
(bearing in mind that I absolutely love my 7d and the quality of pics I can get from it)

Canon 1dx & 7d gripped, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (sports), Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, Sigma 24-70 f2.8, Canon EFS 17-55mm f2.8, , Canon EF 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5 - 5.6, Sigma 2 x teleconverter, Canon 600EX-RT Speedlight.

Yes the 1d4 is better and offers more. Since you said you love your 7d and the image quality let me turn the question around to you. What is lacking? Where is the 7d failing you that you think the 1d4 will make up for? Don't spend money just to spend money (unless you just want to).

I hated the 1.6x crop on my 50D series and went to a 1D2 body. It was much better (the massive amount of AF points, AI Servo speed, 1.3x, feels faster). The 1D4 is a lot better than the 1D2 and it's basically the best in terms of fast paced photography aside from the ridiculously priced 1DX. I do enjoy things that are built nicely and the 1D definitely makes the 7D feel plasticy.

I have had the 7D, 5D Mark II and now the 1D Mark IV. You can't beat the build quality of the 1D Mark IV and the picture quality. I am in love with my 1D Mark IV and have never looked back.

I like my 1D4, but am in love with my wife. Different strokes for different folks! :D

(just kidding, I know what you meant... (I think))

Well I dont have to worry about this problem anymore as the camera shop just rang me to advise someone else just bought the 1d mkiv from them. :-(

Setting aside any specific differences between the two cameras in question, what was it about 1.6x crop in itself that you disliked?

Considering they use the same materials, and that the 7D is one of the most robust non-1D bodies, I don't feel that difference at all. It feels very solid and substantial. The 1D makes the 7D feel a bit lighter, that is about it.

I just traded in my 7D, BG-E7 grip & 3 batteries for an excellent near mint condition 1D Mark IV & got a great deal on it. I was in love (or like) w my 7D but my main issue w it since shooting indoor sports was the ISO. Dont get me wrong, on low ISO the 7D is incredible however upon approaching around 1,600 it lacks. I shot my nephew's indoor basketball games last week w my 70-200 2.8 II & got some incredible shots for the first time shooting sports but u can see the difference between the two games. The set of shots on the black court (which was pretty cool) i had to raise the ISO past 1,600 to 2,000-2,500 & i was not impressed w the results. I've heard & now see on this & other forums the high ISO capabilities of the 1D MK IV even up to 12,800 along w the much faster auto focusing & weather sealing, I would say that ISO 6,400 at least on the 1D would compare to 1,600 max on the 7D. I've attached the 2 links to get some input on this. Anyway, I havent even shot w the 1D yet but this holiday w/e i cannot wait!!! Oh yeah, ive heard that even the low ISOs r better compared to the 7D.

The 1D4 is not 2 stops better than the 7D. It is definitely better and cleaner at 6400 and 12800. Congrats!

What is an improvement is how you can recover a photo when it is underexposed. The 7D is not as forgiving with underexposure as the 1D4. I find that much more valuable than better performance at higher ISOs, personally.
