My 40mm only has a serial on the bottom at the surface of the barrel. No date code on the back mount. Just wondering if that's the norm.

They generally only put date codes on L lenses, and they seem to have discontinued that practice as well

Yeah... No date code on my 70-200 II or 24-70 II... I think the only really eliminated from new lenses/redesigns. Because the 24-105 I had was with a UA date code along with with my 35L. So it seems any lens once 'refreshed' will no longer have it.

RIght, my new 85L had the UA date code on it when I bought it a couple weeks ago. I guess the next gen lenses will be changed.

Yes, some L lenses no longer have date codes. All consumer lenses with Micro Motor AF, Micro USM AF, Ring Type USM AF, and STM AF also have no date codes.

For some strange reason older older Arc Form Drive auto focus lenses made in Utsunomiya, Japan still have date codes. This includes the 15mm Fisheye, 24mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8, 35mm 2.0, 50mm 2.5 Macro, 135mm 2.8 Soft Focus lenses. The TS-E 45mm 2.8 and TS-E 90mm 2.8 also have date codes.

Here is a EF 35mm 2.0 with a 2009 date code. You can still get one today with a with 2012 "A" date code.

My 70-200 2.8 IS II has a "Y"(2010)date code. They seemed to have dropped the date code on the 70-200 II around the middle of 2010 after they produced a bunch with date codes.
