sx40hs - shooting in Manual -long exposures

My friend has one of these cameras - and we went out to shoot some night star shots - I wanted her to set the camera at Iso1600 , f/2.8, and 15 sec exposure - but when she tried to take the picture the a message appeared on the LCD screen saying that the ISO could not be set at 1600 due to slow shutter speed and it defaulted to ISO 100 -
In Manual - you should be able to set the camera any way you wanted - no mater what - but with the ISO defaulting to 100 it was impossible to get any shot to work
Do any of you have any suggestions?? - I actually have an earlier model(s5 IS) of this type of camera and have never had any problems setting for long exposure night shots in manual mode

Sorry, they've designed that into the camera and it can't be by-passed. Canon documents this under the "Tv" section of the SX40 manual. It's not clear from the description of the Av mode whether this would apply if you set the camera to Av at f/2.8 and ISO 1600 or not; might be worth trying.

Loading a SD card with CHDK on it and booting that card will allow you to override the pesky iso limit...doesnt make sense why its there in the first place. Maybe so people dont crank the iso for better low light/astro work and then complain to canon about the noise? Who knows...

The CHDK hack is the solution. I've been experimenting with it lately, and you can set astronomical ISO values (though they become ridiculously high).

Here's a night shot using the CHDK hack where I set the ISO to 500, the f-number to 2.7, and a 15 second exposure. It was actually the black of night when I shot this:
