it's a questions about the IS on this lens. What generation is the IS on this lens.

I was thinking of a getting a lens that I could use for indoor shooting that has low light. Sure the 24-70 2.8 might better, but that is out of my budget range so lets not go there.

Does the IS in this lens have same that's in the 70-200?

Thanks

 I've never heard of that lens. Only the 24-105 f/4L IS, and that one's a bit more than the 24-70L.

oops, I guess a typing error :o . as for the one that's abit more than the 24-70L, do you mean price? or focal length?

if it's price, the difference is about $420 dollars. I also have to get a new zoom lens this year

uh, the 24-105L is a $1250 lens (B&H Price). You maybe thinking of the Canon EF 28-105 that runs about $220, but it does NOT have IS. Those are very different lenses. In fact, the 24-105L is more expensive than the 24-70 that is already out of your budget.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that he meant the 28-135 IS...

If so, it's probably the best walkaround non-L lens you can get.

I am looking at the 24-105 F4 L lens. At the moment I have the 28-135, which it is a great lens, it's only got 1st gen IS. which is ok for a subject that's not moving. However I was interested to know if the 24-105 F4 would have been suitable for indoor sports?

BTW the prices for both lens are :
CANON EF 24-70MM F2.8 USM L LENS $2249.00
CANON EF 24-105MM F4L IS USM LENS $1829.00
please note that the prices are in NZ dollars. If I was going to buy these overseas I would have to pay NZ GST which could easly push the price to what you see here.

The 24-105 will be useless for indoor sports. With IS you can handhold slower shutter speeds but it's not a substitute for high shutter speed action shots.

You need fast shutter speeds and that means you need a wide aperture. f/2.8 usually isn't even enough. Your best bet would be a fast prime ( f/1.8 ), focal length determined by how close you get to the action itself.
