Cool catch. First time I have seen a purplish coloured specimen.

Some bugs do react to flash either by moving off rapidly or by freezing on the spot. I'm pretty certain it does them no harm having watched a dragonfly take off and catch a midge 1 second after I'd done a sequence of about 5 close up flash shots. Once you get used to the behaviour of bugs (always worth watching them for a while) you can tell if you are badly disturbing them.

Thanks for the comments. I think the colour came from my selected light source, together with some chromatic aberration that I have overlooked removing.

Brian, thanks. No flash here. I used a hand held LED cycle light as my only light source, pointed from only a few inches away.
