I use the Kinesis bag when hauling my 500 F4. The bag comes with a single shoulder strap but you can order it with padded backpack straps. It also has a comfortable padded waist belt. I think the Kinesis is a good solution for hiking with a long lens + camera setup. It is also within airline carryon specifications. The bag is big enough to take a camera + 500 + 2X teleconverter.

I use a Kinesis for my 600/4. As in Larry's post above, the optional harness and waist belt make it very comfortable.

Think Tank Glass Taxi
Think Tank Glass Limo

Edit: Kata TLB-600 PL and Tenba Transport LL600 II could also be considerations

I don't have the 500 F4, but I do have the 600 F4. I use either a Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 Mk1 or a Lowepro Supertrekker AW2. The LensTrekker is smaller and lighter but you have little space for accessories, the Super trekker allows me to carry a few extra essentials like coffee, sandwiches and a 300 f2.8 (just in case!) but it it is a bigger heavier pack when empty - but still better IMO.

Got to agree with LPMM

Glass Taxi or Glass Taxi Limo.....

Why?

Got several Lowepro Trekker 600s.... I use one for the 800mm, had one for the 500mm (sold the lens) and another for the 400mm 2.8... I'd occasionally haul the 300 2.8 in the Glass Taxi...

Honestly the 600 Lowepro is long and a pain to carry, use it in the car with the 800mm now...

Started to use the GT with the 400 2.8 with hood reversed and no body.... Great bag, its small.....plus you can use the TT belts and pouches on it..... I hang one pouch off the GT (has some stupid TT name) and I put a 1D body in it... Really convenient....

I'd say for the 500, the TT Glass Limo would be better. Great stuff....

Best wishes on whatever you choose...

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have the Lowepro Pro Trekker 400 AW Backpack and I thought that was a beast. Kind of like the looks of the TT glass Taxi. Does it hold the 500,7D, and 1.4 converter with hood reversed?

Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 II AW Lens looks like it would surely do the job.

Kinesis L611 looks nice also.

Doing the research now as I have to save money after the 500 purchase:lol:.

I also welcome any more tips as this is a giant step up from the 100-400.

a GT isn't going to hold a 500/7d/1.4 assembled...... Way too tall....

There may be room for the body inside (I never tried, all the dividers don't fit right), but it would be tight.

Need a Speed Changer and attach to the outside of the GT to hold the body...

Also do you have a place to carry your BIG tripod and a Custom Brackets Gimble head (if you are serious, its a level of magnitude beyond a Wimberly)?..... I usually use my left hand for that stuff........ That combo is too big to hand hold....

I dont think a 500/7D/1.4 combo will let the light meter work (I never tried it)... I shoot a 7D/300 2.8/1.4 a lot and the meter works fine....

Mark the 7D does auto focus with the 1.4 but not a 2x. The 1.4 only adds 1 stop of light.

Yes am working out all the other stuff. Need a gimbal head and maybe a heavier tripod. Have a tripod that will work but thinking I need something a little heavier. My cousin had a studio locally and has a few tripods I can try out.

I measured the 7D with the 500 and hood reversed and it is 24 inches. The 1.4 adds about another inch.

Are you sure that length is correct? The stated length of the 500 F4 L IS is 15.2 inches without hood.
My Lenstrekker 600 Mk1 holds my 600 F4 L IS with a 1d4 attached and the 600 is nearly 3 inches longer than the 500 according to Canon.

I have the Tamrac 5589 (Expedition 9x) for my 7D with teleconverter on the 500L. Plus I have room for the 40D, 60mm macro, kit lens and flash even though it makes it bulge on the sides. At one time I even managed to cram the 100-400 in there, but it really bulged then. I've only hiked with mine once or twice, but it is super comfy. I don't know what the price runs for it now but 2008 it was $200 or $300.

Everyday use: 7D2, 1.4x v3 Canon TC (sometimes the 2x v2 Canon TC), Canon 500mm f4 L IS USM; 6D, 24-105L

Are you looking for just a bag to hold that lens? Or are you looking for a back pack that can hold that lens?

This is the bag I have and it is designed to also hold large lenses:

Are you sure that you did not measure with the hood in the shooting position? You should be ~18-19" with the hood reversed and body attached

Yes, you all are right. My brain was not keeping track of what I was writing.

Camera with hood reversed 18"
Camera with hood reversed and 1.4 19"
Camera with hood in shooting position 24"
Camera with hood in shooting position and 1.4 25" or very close
