I've been looking for more information on this thing and have not been able to find out if the shell is metal or plastic? Anybody who owns one care to chime in?

Unfortunately they don't make one for the 5d3 yet. If it's an consolation I think the Pixel follows a similar design. VanillaImaging.com

Plastic with a steel chassis. I had my camera fall off of the tripod onto concrete (stripped tightening screw on clamp) and it landed on the grip. The grip still works just fine, and that's not the first time the camera has taken a plunge and landed on that grip. The only detriment being that the retainer tabs for the batteries broke, so now the door itself holds them in. Seems like that plastic is just fine. VanillaImaging.com
