I've been looking for more information on this thing and have not been able to find out if the shell is metal or plastic? Anybody who owns one care to chime in?

I believe it is plastic.

Some people talk about it here - https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1196816

I'm sorry. I just did a search and found that Pixel is a brand. I just wasn't familiar with it.

I don't know about Pixel, but I use a Zeikos and it has a steel clamshell chassis covered in plastic. Unfortunately they don't make one for the 5d3 yet. If it's an consolation I think the Pixel follows a similar design.

Technically they'll all plastic, but often their is a steel chassis inside, kinda like the 60D. Plastic with a steel chassis. I had my camera fall off of the tripod onto concrete (stripped tightening screw on clamp) and it landed on the grip. The grip still works just fine, and that's not the first time the camera has taken a plunge and landed on that grip. The only detriment being that the retainer tabs for the batteries broke, so now the door itself holds them in. Seems like that plastic is just fine. ;)
Granted the $20 Photiv grip on my T2i is just plastic, there is no steel chassis inside. But for $20............

I've read that the Canon BG-E11is made out of Magnesium Alloy.

"The Canon Camera Grip BGE11 is the ideal for high volume and easy vertical shooting; the grip is made from sturdy magnesium alloy and has the same degree of weather resistance as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Camera."

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick
