Canon 300D: B&W conversion

I'm sure this thread may be redundant, but I just discovered this forum and I thought I should ask for feedbacks on B&W conversions
I have a Canon 300D and use Grayscale, Gradient Map, or Chanel Mixer on Photoshop CS2 to convert to B&W. Here are some examples of what I've done so far: Califfoto B&W (external link)
However, I am not sure how to get the right nuances with these functions.

As I was looking for a simpler way for B&W conversion, I ran into a $29 Fredmiranda BW Workflow Pro Plugin (external link) that seems pretty nice and was wondering if someone has experienced it.
