50D and Used Sigma 18-250 lens question

Hi guys, got a question for the forum...

I got a used Sigma 18-250 DC 1:3.5-6.3 HSM lens from ebay and I'm finding something strange with it.

This is what it is doing. With the lens in AF, in any camera mode, there is a delay in taking the picture after the button has been depressed, like a 2 second delay....

If I put the lens in MF, it will fire the shutter the second the button is depressed, no delay...

I've had it for a few weeks now, and at first I thought it just might be the 50D because the firmware was 1.0.3 and 1.0.9 was out so I updated it.

Didn't fix the issue, (and on a side note, when you rotate the zoom it has a lot more drag than any of my other Sigma lenses).

Did I buy a lemon..... or is there some other logical explanation that I am missing?

Any ideas?

Also, on a side note, it is doing the same thing with my other Sigma 50-150 lens and my 105mm macro. Maybe my used 50D has an issue.....

Is this the lens described at http://www.dpreview.com …a_18-250_3p5-6p3_os_c16/2 (external link) The quote below is extracted from that review. On the drag issue, I don't have that lens but see it has a zoom lock - it isn't on by chance?

The 18-250mm uses Sigma's Hypersonic Motor for autofocus, and our Canon mount sample was near-silent in use, and impressively fast and decisive even at full telephoto. It's certainly very much quicker than the Tamron 18-270mm VC, and probably on a par with Canon and Nikon's own lenses (although we were unable to compare them side-by-side).

On further review, I don't think it is a lens issue but something to do with the Camera itself.

I will have to check the lock switch to make sure that it isn't slightly engaged causing the excess drag.

The 'slow to fire the shutter in AF' is affecting all of my lenses, and it did not do that with my 40D.

Any ideas on what might cause a 50D to have this slow to fire the shutter in AF condition?

A setting perhapse?

I updated the firmware and that didn't fix it, and I reset all of the camera settings back to 'stock'.... Maybe I need to remove the all of the batteries and see if that helps.

Would really like to know that i didn't buy a lemon with this Body.

@mrbtd
Where would I go to check that out specifically? And what should the correct setting be?
Thanks.

mrbtd is referring to the timer setting on the camera, where you can set it at either 2 or 10 seconds so you can get yourself in front of the camera for example and be in the shot.

top of the 50D, press the af/drive button and check to see that it's not set to 2 second delay which is represented by a stopwatch looking icon. you will see this on the rear display of the camera. Top is AF mode bottom is Drive mode. If it is, move it to any of the other settings, i.e. low speed, high speed or single shot, and try again.

is this happening with all your lenses or just this one?

Ah I see said the blind man.... well in that case then no it is not set to Timer (the 2sec delay is an estimation of the lenght of time from depressing the button and it actually taking a picture).

Also for any given picture mode, if I switch from AF (has delay) to MF, it will stop having the delay in the shutter release and fire the shutter as soon as it is depressed.

It is very strange and dishearting to think that I upgraded from my 40D to the 50D (so that my nephew could take over the 40D) and now I have a camera that has issues.

Ok, here is a thought, and maybe someone can confirm. I have a Battery Grip installed on my 50D....
So if it is the Camera's shutter button going bad/dirty, shouldn't I be able to test that theory with the Battery Grip'ss Button?

If I get the same delay, would that indicate that it might be some other issue (AF setup maybe) causing the issue if it fires fine in MF mode?

Any insights?

Try the camera with the battery grip removed. Yours wouldn't be the first camera to act strangely when a grip is installed.
