I usually find something like this using search, but having a hard time now.

Can someone tell me how they mount their Speedlites parallel to the umbrella rod and as close as possible to it (i.e. center of umbrella) ? DIY is fine too.

There are little holders that look like an elbow joint.

The bottom part attaches to a light stand.

The top part has a hole for the brolly, and the top has a cold shoe to sit the flash in. The hole for the brolly should be at a bit of an angle so the brolly is tilted upwards, raising the venter of it so that when the flash fires straight ahead, the center of the light hits the center of the brolly.

Thanks for the info. I'm sorry, but I think I was unclear in describing it. What I want is a method to have the flash and umbrella rod essentially touching:

I use a mini ball head made specifically for speedlights. It allows you to rotate the flash down parallel with the umbrella shaft.

This looks promising. I can't find a picture of the product mounted on an umbrella bracket on that site however. Do you have this? If so, can you show what it looks like?

Just so I have it straight, I need an umbrella bracket, the mini ball and a cold shoe right?

There should be a video, on that site, showing the use of it.
No, I don't have it, but was thinking on getting one.
That mini ball head looks like it will work, might try that one.
It is also cheaper

yes.

Here is another option. This was posted in a discussion of the Photek Softlighters. I've got this bracket except with an adaptor for my Elinchrom modifiers. If you are starting from scratch, ie; you have not umbrella bracket, then this is the route I would go.

I have several of these;

Great device. They can even be configured to hold 4 speedlites.

There is a posting on my blog where I describe how I use them.

I made a couple of these which solve the problem perfectly. Sourced the angle adapter in the UK for under £5 each (US$7.50) then just removed the coldshoe and attached the 3/16" thick aluminium bar using domed stainless 4mm bolts into the existing holes. Slotted upright allows adjustment for with/without radio trigger and the L-bracket allows external power pack attachment if required. The umbrella shaft goes in the hole directly beneath the aluminium bar. Easy and cheap!
