BTW, there are quite a few AF-I 300/2.8 lenses floating around for sale. They also have fantastic IQ but are much slower than the 80-200 and don't do well with fast moving subjects. There's a reason they sell so cheap.

Good day got better today. Received a nice gift at work from a nice lady I hadnt seen in a week. Ok, nice. Then I get home and the wifey has surprise gifts for me in the form of recognizable Amazon packages. Tear into them to find the D600 kit, memory card and camera bag... Woohooooo!!

Thanks. I had the 300 VRII last year before collecting Canon gear but I don't think I want to spend that much ths time around.

IIRC you like to do BIF so definitely use the AF-S version. You can find them for under $1000 import/refurbished. They handle the 1.4x TC very nicely. I only use the ED-IF for perched birds, there is no way it could keep up with BIF.

Hope all have had a realy great holiday time and santa has brought some nice prezzies, oh and a happy new year to all, not seen many greetings going around must be old fashioned, earlier I had a friend bring round a Nik D800 with a brand new nikkor 50-450mm f2.8 through out, slim line low weight using tri-alum composites and a titanium inner frame, with no less than 4 ED elements and a double reference ASPH front element that Includes a close fitting clear lens protector - zero Interferrence Isolation from main Element.
