DxOMark reviews Nikkor 28mm f/1.8

"If we look at the DxOMark scores, normalized by testing on a Nikon D3x, we find the AF-S 28mm f/1.8G lens puts in a strong performance, coming 4th on the overall list of lenses and second out of all the wide-angles tested on that camera. In fact, of all the Nikon FX mount lenses tested on any Nikon camera, the Nikkor AF-S 28mm f/1.8G occupies the top on the list - mounted on D3X...Clearly, the resolution score of 19P-Mpix makes it one of the best prime wide-angle lens tested on the site. Traditionally wide-angle lenses will score lower than telephoto lenses because of the requirements of the optical design. For this lens to score so well shows that the lens engineers have one (sic) their homework, producing a stellar lens that outperforms so many other high quality optics - even their own Nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.4G that scored 15P-Mpix."

Nikon D5200 is now available in the US. The new DX-format entry level DSLR has an effective pixel count of approximately 24.1 MP and comes equipped with a 39-point AF system, a 2,016-pixel RGB sensor and a side-hinged vari-angle LCD monitor.

Adorama has a limited quantity of the Nikon D5200 in stock:

Nikon D5200 DSLR Camera Body for $799

Nikon D5200 Kit with 18-55 VR lens for $899

This is why I love that lens so much. Now it is backed up by test comparisons. Nice job Nikon!

And the sensor is made by Toshiba.

I got my Sunway Foto L plate today and it is solid. It mounts to the camera really well.

Yeah, I'd guessed in some posts a while back that it was possible the D3s and D700 sensors (and such) were fabbed by Toshiba and not Renesas, because we didn't really know. Then chipworks published that they were fabbed by Renesas and that was that.

Interesting to see the note about the 5200 sensor being Toshiba--least my intuition was sort of on the right track, rofl.

I would go for to Nikon 70-300 VR, it's not much more and I've had good luck with mine. I have kept mine for the weight advantage. If you have sufficient light it's extremely sharp except for the last 30mm or so on the long end, still good but you can see a little softness creeping in.

I have an offer out to get one for $275. Seems like a good deal?

The Nikon or the Tamron? The Nikon would be a steal at that price. I don't know about the Tamron, I just haven't had much luck with their lenses and don't really follow used prices on them.

It's the Tamron. I took a look at some Flickr pics of some BIF and liked what I saw. The seller accepted my offer.

D600 + 50 1.8 - I do have the dirty sensor spot problem but did a little PS work to get rid of them because this was taken at F16, so I knew they'd be there but I had it set to infinity so that I could get the foreground in focus as well as the mountain

Took this tonight. I'm not much for landscapes but I liked the colors.
