Expensive Nikon lenses ay bargin prices

I'm trying to figure this one out. He's is posting screen shots of listing NOT on ebay's site. So how are people getting there in the first place? He claims from a button off ebay's site, has ebay joined the scammers? :p Something fishy here or he's not supplying all the details.

Edit: Someone in another thread posted it's a redirect. I would still like to see this in action.
Edit2: Sounds like a redirect off a search page.....pretty cool scripting trick. Maybe one of these days eBay will figure out how to use certificates.

Thanks, guys. I probably wouldn't "need" 36 MP, but it's in the category of "you never know if you need it". In addition to more resolution, the D800/E seems to have enough better features to make it worth while getting. I don't know if I'm going to need mural-like photos, but what I want to do can definitely facilitate that.

Zeiss really shines on any of those bodies. If you want that extra sharpness, the D800E is my recommendation. :)

You will get spoiled by the resolution if you Photoshop a lot :D
Zoom in all the way into the eye from a full body shot and there are still plenty of pixel to edit

Cool post, thanks Rick.

Probably will grab a 1.4x in the future. I'm actually very surprised at some of the results I get with the 2x on my 70-200mm wide open at 5.6. I can post samples with 100% crops if anyone is interested.

Yup. You can crop down to 8 MPs and still have a usable image for print. :)

I'd like to see them, I've been looking at the 1.7x - seems like a good compromise. Want to try it on my 70-200 vdii (it's reported to work well there) and my 105mm (just to see what happens).

My 40D produces stupid, maybe even stupid stupid, sharp pictures with the 50 MP. I imagine the D800s can almost produce murals with comparable lenses.

I'm just curious as to how much sharper the E is. If you can't tell unless you crop the hell out of it or are printing murals, the D800 is ~$400 cheaper.

The E is targeted for the landscape and portrait shooter. If you don't need that extra bit of sharpness, the D800 will do just fine. :)

What I imagine will happen is if I want a "budget" body, I'll buy the D600. If I'm going to spend more, I'll probably get the D800E. Maybe I haven't come across them, but I don't see too many reviews comparing both bodies that do much more than explain what a anti-aliasing filter is. Some pictures and opinions would be nice -- you know, an actual review, not a press release.

I love my D600. That sensor is just as good as the D800. :)

Yeah, what I'm ascertained is that they're pretty much the same camera, but the D600 is a little crippled (I wish it had 1/8000th as that comes in handy when shooting wide open outside).

When I was looking at the 800/800e for purchase, I found some photos done of the same thing, side by side with both cameras. The 800e with a 100% crap was a hair sharper, but you'd have to look at the photos presented for awhile to notice it.

Full list of D800/800e Firmware changes

I can't take credit for this, found it over on Dpreview by Shortcents

So far as I know this only applies to the D800 and D800e firmware release.

1) Shutter actuation sound level reduced by 21%

2) Maximim FPS with grip is now 4.1 FPS

3) Camera will now auto-recognise lenses at a distance, prior to mounting

4) CF cards will now fit into SD card slot

5) Camera will now appear dark grey in some lighting

6) LCD Sepia, Magenta and plaid tint modes added

7) Camera is .09 ounces lighter

8) Camera will now accept direct RS232 interface for use with dot matrix printers

9) Blutooth mode allows camera to take (local) calls

10) VR now in-camera. When combined with VRII you get 24 stops.

11) Camera can now be set to 11

I know Rob Galbraith did a nice comparison on his website. The other I read was Lloyd Chambers, but his is a paid site. In order to really get the best out of the d800e from what I have read, you have to stop down to the sharpest aperture for your lens. If you shoot at F16 or wide open, the differences between the d800 and d800e are hardly even noticeable.

At F4-F8, the d800e does manage a slight sharpness increase, but I find from my own testing that this is very easy to sharpen the d800 to the d800e levels. Some argue that you can then just sharpen the d800e so that it is sharper once again, but there is only so much you can sharpen an image before it looks too sharp. That said, I oversharpen all my images for print. I have printed crops of the d800e and the d800 at an equivalent of 50" and I could only tell which was which when I inspected from closer than a foot.

For me, the false color in the d800e and the chance of moire is more of negative for me than the slight loss of sharpness in the d800. The d800 sharpens very well and the AA filter is very weak.

Of course, the argument will go the other way as well. I'd just buy either one and deal with the pros and cons when you get to them ;)
