The local store rents D800s, so I hope they have it for the weekend (I need to check with work to make sure I have the days off to make the rent worthwhile); it's OSU's graduation, so it's kind of a big event...

Kind of off topic, but have you traveled to SE Asia? If you, did you feel safe if lugging around camera equipment?

I used to work there, never had a problem.

Myboostedgts No, I like it but my body & my chronic pain has limited my ability to shoot and I can't justify keeping it.

If Nikon is the dark side then it's time to come to the super-dark side: Micro 4/3. Your body will thank you :)

On a more serious note, I hope your condition improves and pain subsides.

I haven't travelled to SE Asia yet. If I did, everything would be insured and gear would be the bare minimum.

Yeah, I have to check my home owner's insurance. I have a Sapphire Preferred card, and I'll have to check what their "insurance" entails.

I'll have anywhere from a 40D, Zeiss, and my laptop (what I have now), to a D800E Zeiss, 24 and 70-200, 2x TC, and a laptop (what I hope be be afforded). I mean, that's stuff to be stolen any place on planet earth. Not bringing it would take away a lot on a backpacking trip.

So, basically be smart? (And as a bonus, what's the region's internet like?)

it's a big "region" - where are going? urban areas had good net access, but it might not be free. rural areas not so good.

Yeah, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia, etc. -- that "general" area. I'd like to stretch it out to 2-3 month. I can probably hit up a bunch of that area during that span.

Basically, I'd like to be able to upload photos onto some storage sites (with lots of big files), plus blog.

The only one of those places I'd be careful in is the Philippines - I had a couple of employees get robbed there on different occasions. Taxi drivers delivered them and their luggage to unsavory neighborhoods from the airport in Manilla and they were allowed to leave with the clothing they were wearing. I spent quite a bit of time there and never had a problem, but I was cautious about where I went. It can happen anywhere, but to us that's the only place we had any problems like that.

Never visited Myanmar or Laos. Malaysia is nice too, catch it if you're in the area.

Will you be driving? The company I worked wouldn't let us drive anywhere in that region, I'd get a driver who would cart me around; others used taxis. Driving, from what I observed from being in a car was insane.

I haven't thought about how I'd get around. I figure it's in the category of "I'll figure it out when I have to".

In the Philippines I liked the jeepneys, they're cheap, usually crowded with locals and a fun waynto get around.

Yup. Just kick in the street smarts and you'll be fine. Have fun!
