I have contracts like Julian's. The images I do for the government ministry's are very tight with their contracts. They will not even allow me to post on my website. I'd rather have the contract than post the images ;)

^This. As long as I get paid, it's easy enough to follow that rule. :)

Hi, friends.

I currently have a 35mm prime and the kit lens (18-105) that came with my D7000. I'm satisfied with both.

Now I want some reach. What can you guys recommend for hitting about 250mm or more starting with the cheapest? This will be for sports and/or tripod mount, so VR isn't a priority. Cost is.

Thanks

Thank you. bw!

Do you want a zoom or prime? I'd definitely look at the 300mm F4.

Cheapest would probably be the Tamron 70-300mm. Not sure about the focus on the tamron for sports though. Might be better off with the nikon version.

What kind of sports? Indoor or outdoor? If mostly outdoor, the 70-300 is a great value. Fast focus, reasonably sharp, good focal length on the D7000 for most sports. The 300 f/4 is fantastic, though a little on the tight side for some sports.

Outdoor use, and the sport would be surfing (you can never have too much reach with surfing). High shutter speeds, mostly 800 and up.

I would go with the 300mm F4 then. Add a 1.4x teleconverter and your set. Not the cheapest option, but pretty good bang for your buck!

Mike, I think the 300 f4 with a 1.7x tc would work fine. I shot a surf competition 4 years ago in Hawaii and rented the 600mm Canon. I had a 1.4x tc with me but didn't use it.

You say sports, I instantly think "80-200 f/2.8" Look for one of the older Screwdrive Nikon ones, They're very good and generally quite affordable

-edit- Now i read the surfing, Then 300mm f/4 as said above

If anyone is looking for an awesome fairly cheap wireless remote this one is great. The range is very far. I tried it up to about 200ft with no issues and from different rooms in the house without issue:cool:

i got it for $55 on amazon

SMDV RFN-4s
comes with a battery for the remote and a small pouch. the receiver runs off the camera

In that case, I agree with the 300 f/4 suggestions. As far as TC's go, I'd try to test them out first if you can. The AF tracking accuracy and speed loss with the 1.7x may be too noticeable for you on the D7000 compared to the 1.4x.

I have that as well. Doesn't work as cleanly with the D800 unfortunately. I haven't tried it with my D800E but it kept locking up my previous D800.

Compatibility issue?

More than likely. After the first couple of lock ups I tossed it to the side and forgot about it. Now I just use the timer when it's needed. I can get the cheaper Nikon remote for the D7100.

Dang! I was skeptical at first but read tons of reviews and people seemed very pleased with it on the D4 and D800 models so i took the chance.
