Just gonna come out and say it. I'm tired of waiting for the Canon 7D mk2. The D7100 looks really nice.

But, I have a 5D Classic which I love and will probably never sell. So, if I were to say... want more speed and FF, Is the Nikon D3 still an option? Is it getting a bit long in the tooth? I'm happy with the 12MP FF of the 5D and the D3 seems to offer at least 1 stop better ISO and also its faster both in fps and the AF is likely (much) better. I don't have a problem with pro sized bodies.

I tried a D3 and D3s, friend from Toronto let me use her Nikon gear. Only negative I found with them were the ergonomics. Part of that is it was during a serious cold spell and I was having a lot of difficulty being outside and trying to operate cameras I wasn't at all familiar with. Image quality and DR were both good, I thought better than than what I was getting from my 5Dc.

The big birds are fine with this set up. In dull overcast days the af will flutter, you have to pump the back button sometimes to get it to lock on in af-c.

DPreview, or whatever, has a D800/E comparison. Enough to justify getting the E for IQ. However, $400 extra is a different story...

Didn't see it but for the most part if you have to pixel peep two like images to find a difference it won't be worth the extra $$$. Just my opinion. Someone who shoots landscapes and blows up their prints would probably disagree.

How many people shoot landscapes @ F5.6? ;)

I'm usualy composing a foreground subject and want loads of dof. F11 or higher is usually where I'm at. The differences would be nil as diffraction would overcome the benefits of no aa filter.

Actually, you pay premium for getting the "TOP" IQ for this period of FF dslr. It has little to do with how much it improves from D800 :D
Even if D800E only beat D800 by 1%, people will still buy it because...its #1 not #2

Fair point. I would like to be able to print large, so it would help. If just used for an occasional print or web, then a D800 it is. I suppose it's more "just in case".

Good to know d800 is only useful for web size images and the occasional prints. ;)
