I'm going to get this for my D800.

Then no one will ever consider stealing it. Camouflaged in cheapness.

Like the EBay add states "it is a new trendy accessory." I gotta agree with that...;)

I just realized that I could rent an E and 21 for less than a used D600 for my trip. Of course, it'd be money "wasted", but I'd still get those two for a third of the price.

Why not just buy and sell. I'm sure the cost would be less than a rental fee? Just a thought.

Buying would be stretching it kind of thin. But you're right. I could probably get 80%+ back.

Buy used to reduce money lost. May even be able to get all of it back.

whoa the "happy" is pretty blurry (it's the dog's name). I shot these in JPEG mode also (smallest file...6MP). I used a large font size, too...

85 1.8 G? The D600 tracks very well for shots like this. :)

Actually no...I used the 85mm 1.8 AF (before the G or D versions). does not have a built-in motor for AF...! I was just posting on nikon cafe about how all my shots were out of focus. These 3 were the best few out of maybe 40 shots. I kept running back and forth trying to get the dog to run towards me.

I believe I backfocused every single time. Even though these shots were pretty good - they weren't spot on at all. I had to do quite a bit of sharpening/add clarity to make it look more in focus.

Please help! These were my settings:

Assign AE-L/AF-L button to AF-On (f4) Set dial to CH (continous high) Set to AF-C (AF-continous) Set (a1) AF-C Priority Selection to "Release" Set (a3) Focus Tracking with lock-on to "OFF" I use Single point === explanation: AF-On allows you to decouple the shutter button from the focus button, which means you can HOLD the AF-On and the camera will keep finding focus because you are at AF-C(continuous). You're using CH(continuous high) to get a high framerate. Release priority allows you to shoot regardless of focus because a fast moving subject has an always-changing focus area. You only use "Focus Priority" for static subjects. Focus tracking with lock on is the amount of time it takes for the camera to begin focusing again after the initial focus was acquired. If set to OFF, the camera will always be "on the hunt" while your thumb is pressing AF-On. Single point makes the camera faster, because it doesn't have to think much.

I think I might have had better luck with d39 focus point mode. The dog was moving predictably toward me--I had very little problems keeping the dog in the middle of my frame.

So what did I do wrong? :(

Hmmm...I'm not sure. I would have to check and compare my settings against yours but, it sounds about right to me. The only thing that might be the culprit is your lens. The AF motor might not be fast enough and I've never used that lens before. When I shoot action subjects, I tend to use the 70-200 VR2.

Just gonna come out and say it. I'm tired of waiting for the Canon 7D mk2. The D7100 looks really nice.

But, I have a 5D Classic which I love and will probably never sell. So, if I were to say... want more speed and FF, Is the Nikon D3 still an option? Is it getting a bit long in the tooth? I'm happy with the 12MP FF of the 5D and the D3 seems to offer at least 1 stop better ISO and also its faster both in fps and the AF is likely (much) better. I don't have a problem with pro sized bodies.

/help

D3 rocks youll love it. Shot couple MX races with it and is very capable camera and they sell really cheap. Battery life, fps, autofocus, autoWB, all great. Only downside is the low res. LCD (better than 1dsiii) compared to newer models.

My 200mm f4 got dropped off today, late this afternoon I went out with it to take a few photos in the light rain that was falling. I took two, and then it started pouring so I got under cover fast. D800, 200mm, f/5, 1/250, ISO 500. I like the lens, it's really got a nice old school feel to it but I think it'll take awhile to get comfortable with it. I'd like to get it on a tripod, but RRS said it would take a week or two get my ground pod and my foot mount for it.

So I snagged a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 last night for a sweet price. I've been looking for a 50mm for a while. I think I'll keep my 1.8G for when I want AF still.
