Interesting experience there. That's another factor that has me wary of going full-blown Nikon with my setup: I get the impression their lower-end crop bodies are a lot more gimped than Canon's. I shot with the Rebel series for quite a few years and was completely happy, knowing their IQ was identical to a 60D or even 7D. With the D5x00 or D3x00, it seems there are reports of soft images, not to mention the ridiculous inability to AF with many older lenses. No doubt about it, Canon is a system that offers more value for your money overall. Sadly, for landscapers on FF, the combination of embarrassing DR and the complete lack of decent UWA zooms kills the deal.

I played with the 5200 and it lacks a lot of things considering it's a body I would recommend to a beginner who's stuck in green box. It feels like a toy in comparison to Canon's Ti series. Don't expect pro performance from this camera. :)

I have no direct experience with this lens but from the info I've gathered although it looks good it's too pricey that many recommend getting 300mm AF-S + TC instead. Maybe wait a little bit till the price drops or wait for the new rumored 300mm AF-S VR.

Darth, what do you think of the new 80-400 VR? The samples on the D4 and D800E look real good. :)

I've got the new 80-400 VR.

99% of my shooting is landscape and 99% of my landscape shooting is done between 14mm and 24mm though. (I like wide shots)
However, I'm really impressed with the 80-400. IQ is great at all focal lengths and the VR is truly impressive.

If I was a wildlife guy, it would never leave my D800E.

Over on Nikon Cafe there are 51 pages of praise (with images) for this lens.

I tried one in a dimly lit store on my D800 and could not get a clean shot. Given the reports I've seen I've decided I should give it another try. Reports are it is very close to the big primes in IQ and fast focus.

Colorado at 14,000 ft.

These were taken with my D600 and 3 lenses, a Rokinon 14mm F2.8, Rokonon 35mm F1.4 and Nikkor 300mm F4 ED AF AI (the non AI-S version).

I took the bike up to Mount Evans yesterday for some hiking and photography. At 14,264 ft, the air is a little thin, there is 60% less oxygen in your lungs at this elevation compared to sea level.

You can't beat the views though.

It was storming on and off all day. Temperatures were in the 50's, which was pretty nice compared to the high 90's down lower.

In this shot, you can see South Park Basin in the far distance.

Up this high, there are only a few species of wildlife. Marmots, pika, big horn sheep, and mountain goats are common. Elk can be found here, but usually stay around the 12,000 ft level as there is more grazing there.

I seen a few bighorns off in the distance and pika were everywhere. I took off my 14mm lens and put on my 300mm lens for a few shots of the mountain goats.

All Nikkor AF-lenses are also AI-S. I think you mean 'non AF-S version'.

Beautiful shot.

I haven't shot motocross for a number of years (and that was with kit lenses and entry level bodies) so I am excited to get to shoot it again this up coming weekend. I really like your editing style and think I am going to copy it for my first few tries.
