Interesting experience there. That's another factor that has me wary of going full-blown Nikon with my setup: I get the impression their lower-end crop bodies are a lot more gimped than Canon's. I shot with the Rebel series for quite a few years and was completely happy, knowing their IQ was identical to a 60D or even 7D. With the D5x00 or D3x00, it seems there are reports of soft images, not to mention the ridiculous inability to AF with many older lenses. No doubt about it, Canon is a system that offers more value for your money overall. Sadly, for landscapers on FF, the combination of embarrassing DR and the complete lack of decent UWA zooms kills the deal.

Keep in mind Canon doesn't have any "old" lenses (pre EF/EF-S) that AF on any modern Canon body, entry-level or not. As for soft images I've been using several D5000 and now D5100 bodies since their inception and never had a problem. Here are a few samples:

That's probably because D5100 did not have this problem. From my brief web research the softness seems to be a newly added "feature" of D5200 and _possibly_ D7100.

I've used both the D5200 and D7100 and neither had an issue with sharpness. Here is a full 24MP image from a D5200 using a 35G f/1.8 lens:

I used XTi, 40D, T2i, T3i, Sony Nex F3, and Sony Nex 6.

The photos out of that D5200 were unacceptably soft compared to any of these cameras. I used the 18-55 VR - which is a soft lens - but also 70-200 VR. It didn't take much to find loads of threads related to D5200 softness, like this one:

http://www.pocket-lint.com …ofocus-system-d7000-error (external link)

You, and most others, may well have a properly functioning camera, but there's a lot of issues with at least some bodies.

Anyway, this was just one of the reasons I decided not to stick with it.

That pocket lint thread was discussed on dpreview and if I recall nobody could reproduce their findings. Based on my read of the article they may have just had a body out of AF alignment. With a little more effort and expertise they could have differentiated between AF issues and mirror slap by using the D5200's exposure delay mode outside of LV, which would emulate the same absence of mirror movement as LV. I'm not saying there aren't any D5200 bodies that don't have that issue (every model produces duds off the assembly line), but I haven't seen credible information online to indicate there is a problem endemic to the D5200.

In my case I am sure it wasn't mirror slap as shooting in Live View made no difference. Neither did manual focusing.

Either I got a poorly calibrated body - which is possible - or both kit lenses were total and utter crap. Either case, it was an enormous difference vs even an old D90 my friend loaned me once.

That looks to be in great shape. I am hoping to be able to pick one up next spring. Crazy that someone used your pictures that quickly for a craigslist scam. Good luck with the sale.

MILKY WAY light painting (external link) by www.HYOFOTO.com (external link), on Flickr

No tripod.. used a blanket on top of my car as a make-shift tripod and 5-sec delayed shutter.

Light painting done with samsung Galaxy phone ;)

unbelievable.. first time taking picture of Milky Way much less even seeing it with my own eyes. This wasn't my first attempt--had to try different settings. Ended up with f/3.2, iso3200, 25sec.

I didn't realize the Milky way was so huge... thought I would need to scour the sky for it. Guess I've lived in the city too long. It was easily visible and spanned the entire sky. This was taken somewhere in Idaho on my way to Jackson Hole, WY.
