I have a freak of a lens, the 50mm 1.8G. I think there's something wrong with mine! It's TOO SHARP!!!

This particular shot is I think ISO 3200-6400. I have Luma at 50%, which softens the image considerably!!! Even though it's been reduced from its 12.1 mpx, the original is tack sharp, with hardly any noise (love that D3 sensor).

It beats the Sharpness of the 135L that I rent on occasion. A frikken $200 lens, can you believe that?!!! I can't do portraits with this lens, because it reveals the veins in eyes. I have to dial the clarity back to -31 for portraits. It's NUTS!

Can cameras like the D200 use ETTR to optomize getting cleaner images without noise, as i understand this camera in particular suffers because of low-mid level luminance, so in theory raising the Compenesation perhaps 2/3 - 1 stop might help.

Any ideas folks?

Yep, ETTR will be helpful regardless of the body you are using as long as you aren't clipping highlights (or aren't clipping highlights that are important to you).

nice D200! I am thinking about upgrading my 2nd body to the D200 (from D80). Will there be noticeable improvement? noise performance mainly

Which is the best frame? Would you have cropped any of these differently?

I have heard and read that it can perform better than the D300 which switched to a different type of sensor... non-CCD I think. I've seen some low light examples and was quite impressed.. Low light shots from my D80 are pretty unusable in my opinion higher than ISO 400 or so.. at least for weddings.

Anyway, at the rate full frame cameras are dropping in price (saw new D600 plus 24-70? lens for $1600) and refurb D600 for $1350.....maybe I'll wait to upgrade my 2nd camera.

I could not be happier with the D600... yes, there are dust issues but not too hard to clean up in post (just a few clone stamps) when shooting landscape. Invisible when shooting at more open apertures :)

its the AF options that are interesting me, like the ability to increse the size of the focus brackets to help focus locking and tracking, that will help me Imencely with my planes, and hopefully the 55-300VR will be quite good in this departent as well?

No idea about the lens, never used it - but the current DX 55-300 VR is only £205 brand new from Amazon, and Nikon have a £40 cashback offer on it I believe (haven't checked the cashback small print).

Starting afresh with Nikon after 15 years with Canon. To be honest I'll probably wait until Canon catches up in the sensor stakes and then go back, but for now I'll be joining my son in the Nikon camp.

I think i'll be going for a D5100 & 50/1.8G for xmas. Seen nothing but good things said about that lens and it's very well priced, even here in the UK.

Gary.
