I would try not to worry about them. Dead/stuck pixels are quite common on OLED screens. I remember freaking out about my PS Vita when I first got it. I highly doubt itll ever become an issue for you. My D750 has a few dead pixels, but it will not affect my work whatsoever. I could easily send it back to the seller on Amazon from which I bought it "like new-used" for about $1850, but I don't want to be without my camera for even a day :)

LCD monitor manufacturers usually have a tolerance level that they'll allow returns for...like up to 3 or more pixels or something..

Nikon just responded to my service request yesterday saying that stuck pixels were not normal. I didn't have any on my Vita either or on my Olympus OM-D (the older one...EM-5?)

What are they going to do? Do you have to send it in?

I would most likely to have it fixed. It's my 2nd camera from Best Buy and I don't want to go through that hassle again. I would have to do it after the New Year. I'm busy until then.

I was testing out my D810 some more indoors just shooting photos of my 2 year old daughter. I had my 85 1.8 G mounted and was having a little bit of a difficult time acquiring focus lock using the AF points even those located in the center columns. I was in AF-S mode and single AF point selected. This was under normal household incandescent lighting. I am only bringing this up because I was a little surprised at this since I've never, ever had this issue with the 5D3. At first I was using the outer points to compose, but it wouldn't lock at all so I figured I would use the center columns which has the cross type points. Same thing. It would either not lock at all or would take forever to lock. So this forced me to look into the various AF options. Haha. (Just didn't have the time since I've gotten the D810 last week!)

I shuffled through the various non-automatic settings and was thinking about a few things:
-For AF-S, should I set it for release priority or focus priority? Seems like release priority will allow me to get the shot regardless of focus lock or not. Of course focus priority would probably give me the best results. What are you folks using?
-For AF-C, pretty much the same question. Release then Focus priority?
-For AF-C, I find that the expanded points (8 points surrounding the selected AF points) really work well to the point where I'm thinking about just using AF-C all the time. I use the AF-On button so I can still stop AF when I want to.
-For AF-S, I see something similar, except it's the surrounding 4 points. However, the selected AF point doesn't light up red. Does that mean it's not active and only the ones above, below, to the left and right are active?

Thoughts? Comments?

Nick, I use Focus priority on both AF-S and AF-C on my D4. I typically use single point focus fwiw.

I would appreciate some thoughts and recommendations about the 85mm f/1.4 vs f/1.8. I've not really been a portrait guy, so I am thinking the f/1.8 is plenty good enough. Agree? Any alternative suggestions?

Although my D810's (was delivered today!) main role will be using the 14-24 to capture landscapes, cityscapes, streetscapes, seascapes....all the scapes.....I would like to give it other roles as well. A portrait lens is one idea - I've never had one and I have started getting a little portrait work this year.

Why are you asking about Nikkors? I thought you'd just get the Otus ;-)a

I had to make that decision as well when I moved from Canon to Nikon. I had the 85L and really liked that lens. I also had the 85G 1.4 when I shot Nikon a few years ago. Did all the usual comparisons, including price, which ended up being a big factor. I ended up with the 85 1.8 G because it had very favorable reviews independent of cost. The AF was at least as good as the 1.4G, the IQ also. It doesn't have Nano coating nor does it have ED glass, but I feel it's a great bargain, much like the Canon 85 1.8. I do use the 85mm prime at weddings, but honestly only for select shots. Didn't think that merited an investment in the 1.4. I also had the Sigma 85 1.4 and thought that the AF was inconsistent.

Hehehe.....I wish! I'm afraid I've used up all my Otus allowance on the 55mm.

Thanks much for your thoughts - very much appreciated. The 85mm 1.8 does indeed look like a bargain: excellent performance for the money. Kind of like that Canon 35 IS. :) Seems like Nikon has several well-liked f/1.8 lens offerings.

Yeah, all of the recent f/1.8G variants are pretty well regarded for outright performance. They're all fairly well priced to boot

Ha!

That's the one lens I am missing with Nikon!!!
Almost bought the 24-120 just to get a VR lens for shooting casual video.
I still might get it...or probably end up with the 16-35VR.

Going on vacation beginning Friday, so hopefully I'll have some photos to post here in a week or two.

Bringing my D750 (D810 stays home!), 24, 50, 70-200, and SB-910.

Looking forward to it.

I use AF-C 99% of the time but I set both to release priority. I also use AF-ON for activating AF/VR instead of the shutter button.

Regarding AF points I use single or Group AF depending on the background. My main subject are usually wildlife and kids sports.
