We all gave up on waiting for a D400 so Nikon give us a D500 as a DX brother for the new D5.
Cross post from the News section
Great looking specs and interestingly less resolution than the D7200 (~20mp vs ~24mp). I wonder who designed/builds this sensor. D5 up to ~20mp from 16mp - a very welcome bump

Same AF system
- (153 points, 99 cross, ).
- 98 of those are not selectable though leaving 55 selectable in total and 35 cross types selectable
- Near full width coverage in the D500 but still pretty big in the D5 (would have liked bigger in the D5 ideally though but still an improvement).
- centre at -4EV and rest at -3EV
- The DX crop mode in the D500 (down to roughly the same size as m4/3) cuts out a number of the available AF points. Why bother with the crop mode then? Just shoot normally and crop in post.
(below was snipped from section 1-1 of the digest)
The new AF array looks interesting (I assume it will eventually filter down to the D810 and D750 replacements). I'll be interested to see how it performs in the field. Finally they've given us some cross sensitive points at the edges of the frame. I'll also be interested to see how the available max aperture of the mounted lens affects the operation of those points. I'm hoping at least the centre cluster retain their f/8 sensitivity-
Frame rate: D500 matches the 7D2 and D5 (finally) catches up to the 1DX (12fps with AF and 14 locked out)-
Buffer: 200 12-bit lossless raw
for both (using the highest speed XQD available). I'm guessing 14-bit lossless should be in the order of 150 or so. Wow!-
Native ISO range: 100 to a bonkers 102400 in the D5, only astounding 51200 on the D500. I'm hoping the D5 should be very clean at 25600-
Higher res main touch screen, tilting in the D500 with a couple of extra functions over the fixed touch screen on the D5- Automatic MFA using Live-view
. That will be very interesting-
Flicker reduction: Astoundingly the D5 only uses it for movies while the D500 uses it for movies and stills. What's with that?-
Dual memory slots in both. D500 uses SD and XQD while Nikon is building two versions of the D5, one with dual XQD and one with dual CF -
no mention of CFast though-
Radio control for speedlights-
4K Video; But only 3 minute duration on the D5 (what's with that?) while a second short of 30 minutes in the D500-
HDMI output to external recorder on D500 (unsure of D5)-
Electronic VR in-body on D500 in video recording
Some interesting differences there. The D500 looks like a good competitor to the 7D2 (albeit a year or so late) while the D5 should at least give Canon something to leap over with the 1DX replacement. Looking forward to reviews to see how they perform
