So... I canceled my d600 order. A splurge without enough research. I basically wanted a 5d3 but unwilling to pay canon price, and found out the d600 is not what I'm looking for.

Few more reasons I didn't take the plunge:

1. No af-on
2. Selling is a big task
3. AF not spread out enough.

i think AF-ON feature is in the settings like all Nikons, you just have to turn it on.

Yes, am aware of that, but AE lock would be overridden. I can actually live with that since I use shutter half press as ae lock.

Selling all my gear, then getting comparable gear is too much for the incremental improvement (non lusting side of the argument). That's the issue.

Or you can put AE lock to another button. But however one maps all those function, there is one less button, so one has to live with one less function on reach of the right hand.

I own it and it's a very good camera.

Fwiw, the D600 is a better spec'd camera compared to your 5D 2. The AF is really good.

Agreed. The d800 has a bit snappier af in low light, but the d600 can hold its own. There are many aspects in which I prefer to shoot with the d600 over the d800.

Assign any of the function buttons to AE lock. They are located on the right side of the lens mount and accessed by your middle finger or pinky finger. You can set AE lock for either of those buttons and use the AE-L button for focus.

That is what I have it set up for.

this is neat...

This is probably the most interesting Nikon patent since I started my coverage in 2008: last year Nikon filed a patent (2012-242615) in Japan for a digital back that will transform a 35mm film SLR camera into a DSLR. The sensor is attached to the camera's back panel and by replacing it, you will be able to get the digital solution many have dreamed for years (digital FM2 anyone?). Since the back panel is detachable, the switch between film and digital SLR will be simple and fast. The patent application is current - it was filed on May 19, 2011 and was published a week ago (December 10, 2012). In the patent Nikon describes a mechanism for adjusting/fine-tuning the flange distance with a screw located on the digital back. Here are few paragraphs from the actual patent application I copied directly from the Japanese IPDL database (machine translated):

The camera back exchange type camera which images the object image acquired by the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body, and obtains electronic image data is known by replacing with the rear lid with which the camera body was equipped, and equipping a camera body with the camera back having an image sensor.

In the camera back of the description to this Patent document 1, when the moving mechanism to which the position of an image sensor is moved, and the position detection sensor which detects the position of an image sensor are provided and a moving mechanism moves an image sensor based on the output of a position detection sensor, The image sensor to the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body is positioned.

^^Neat. It would be nice to have that flexibility instead of replacing a body every so often.

I saw that and I just stared at it for a while since he has obviously never seen a digital back for a film camera before. By his own admission he has only followed Nikon since 2008 so I suppose he was unaware of Nikon's initial venture into digital with Kodak by basically sticking a digital back onto an F5.

I'm surprised you aren't having a Canon fire sale and buying one of those D600 kits. :p

I still havnt moved my 28mm f/1.8, The selling market is too congested right now, But yeah, the sales on the D600 were VERY tempting to me :/

The problem is, as i said, i doubt i can move my stuff quickly, That said my stuff has been sitting in the corner due to a lack of subjects to shoot right now.. I kinda have downtime in the winter (Why camera stuff makes a bad-ish xmas gift, i cant really use it till next year)

Even when I'm able to get out and drive these short days with the sun low in the sky really make for some difficult shooting but I've learned over the years to load up on the camera goodies between Thanksgiving and Christmas and not really use any of the goodies until spring.
