this is neat...

This is probably the most interesting Nikon patent since I started my coverage in 2008: last year Nikon filed a patent (2012-242615) in Japan for a digital back that will transform a 35mm film SLR camera into a DSLR. The sensor is attached to the camera's back panel and by replacing it, you will be able to get the digital solution many have dreamed for years (digital FM2 anyone?). Since the back panel is detachable, the switch between film and digital SLR will be simple and fast. The patent application is current - it was filed on May 19, 2011 and was published a week ago (December 10, 2012). In the patent Nikon describes a mechanism for adjusting/fine-tuning the flange distance with a screw located on the digital back. Here are few paragraphs from the actual patent application I copied directly from the Japanese IPDL database (machine translated):

The camera back exchange type camera which images the object image acquired by the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body, and obtains electronic image data is known by replacing with the rear lid with which the camera body was equipped, and equipping a camera body with the camera back having an image sensor.

In the camera back of the description to this Patent document 1, when the moving mechanism to which the position of an image sensor is moved, and the position detection sensor which detects the position of an image sensor are provided and a moving mechanism moves an image sensor based on the output of a position detection sensor, The image sensor to the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body is positioned.

Is this similar to Leica R8/9? http://www.dpreview.com/news/2003/6/25/leicadigitalr9 (external link)

Well just read that Nikon also used the Kodak digital back, so its quite similar.

Anyone has got a link with pictures comparing dynamic range of d600 vs 5dmk2? I am really tempted to switch if its as good as it looks on paper.

It shouldnt be far off from this: http://www.fredmiranda.com …dex_controlled-tests.html (external link)

definitely a difference.

I would switch for the better AF spread. The grip and back controls are kind of meh compared to the 5D2. The 5D2 feels considerably more comfortable.

If I didnt have so much to sell and buy, I'de switch too, but not for reasons of IQ.

the current deal seemed blazing hot at first, but since it's lasting so long, the market is probably oversaturated with that lens that selling it off for a lower price kind of kills the deal a bit.

Thanks for this! I've only had a quick look on the pictures and this really is a big difference!

I only shoot landscapes, nothing else. Dont really care about AF or the controls, but the DR is going to make me switch. I only have 2 lenses that cover my needs well and both of them will be easy to get from Nikon too. Will look into this after the Christmas break.

I dont think the D600 has a better AF Spread, more points, but still clustered up in the center, just like the 5D2

it has a better spread, just that the outer points arent as far as the D800 or 5D3, and no cross types outside.

the AF illuminator and flash are also good selling points over canon. Construction is very solid, but feels kind of small. Something about the grip makes it feel almost rebel like.

True. Feels quite more comfortable with the grip though holding it in either orientation.

I just bought a D7000 with 35 1.8. I'm going to start selling my canon gear off to get a D600 and give the D7000 to the wife to replace her T2i.

I've been on the fence a while and I got to play with a d600 today and I just loved it.

Like you, Worrptangl, I just sold off my Canon gear and grabbed the D7k. I'm really enjoying it. Great camera and it's much better than my T2i was (although the T2i is a fantastic camera).

What I like better about the Nikon: quiet shutter, much better low light performance, far more options in the menus, heavier (that's a mindset, but it feels like quality), snug lens (instead of lens creep, which is common to a few Canon lenses), and so much more.

What I like better about the Canon: auto white balance. The Canon kicks the Nikon's butt on this one big time. My T2i never missed white balance on auto (at least not in the circumstances I was using it), but my Nikon misses. This could be user error as The Nikon d7000 gives you a huge amount of room when setting up auto features. It's quite confusing.

For example, on Canon's T2i you tell the camera the max ISO for auto and then you shoot in auto (or not). With the Nikon (at least the only model I have ever used, my new D7000) you can set several different auto scenarios that you override or that override you depending on the situation and what you tell it. You can also set the parameters of the auto shutter speed and such.

Some people (I assume people used to Canon) complain about Nikon's menu system and say it's too complicated and deep, but I like it better than Canon's (probably partially due to me wanting to like it better).

So, outside of the white balance issues (I shoot in raw, so it's easy to fix in processing), it's a great camera.

And I can't say enough how much I appreciate how quiet it is. My T2i made a lot of noise. I took a pic in the Yale library a few months ago and everyone looked up. I was doing an HDR so I whispered "sorry" and took two more. The Nikon, on the other hand, is an extremely quiet clack instead of the T2i's obnoxious Cha-Chink.

Thank you. bw!

I wonder sometimes - Is Nikon and Canon sharing the same boardroom with one side saying "we will do this" and the other "we will do that" like secret partners or something...

What would be considered as a benchmark worthwhile upgrade over the D70s taking Into account funds (lack of) just as comparison the best camera with digi format prior to my D70s, was a canon SX10IS Bridge camera, and I kid you not, not many cameras of pre 2006 technology cud beet It for Its IQ and Image smoothness due to Its sensor size v extra fine save option, It was one of the best(and probably still is) bridge cameras ever.
Dont foreget 10mps and that amount of IQ amazing.....

Mike, I actually started with Nikon. I switched due to a deal on a 40D from my D50. Which I actually gave to my sister, about 8 months before, to help get her started. I have used Canon ever since. I have always liked both systems. It takes me a minute or two to get back into using Nikons. I have been on the fence for a long time. I missed the ergonomics of Nikons even though I love Canon's also.

I was looking to go full frame, but wanted to wait to see what the new models were. The 6D's button layout just doesn't do it for me. I never liked it on the 60D. The 5DII is a great camera just wanted something that could handle low light better. Enter the D600 enough said.

As I think I told you a while back, considering funds, the best upgrade path is the D90. They're being sold new for $579 now and you can find them used for less than $400. I would skip the D80/D200.

Does that include the body cap, battery, and charger or do you have to pay extra for them?
