I shall shortly be upgrading from my 450D to a new 7D. The memory cards used in the 450D will be unsuitable for the new camera, so was wondering which cards would be best for me to get. I don't need huge capacity, 2 or 4gb would be plenty as I would prefer 2 smaller cards rather than 1 large one, but I would like a fast card.

I do have a CF card which came with my Pentax Optio point and shoot camera, but that is only 256mb and will be useless long term int 7D, OK for a test when the camera arrives. :)

I have always had good results with Sandisk. Any of their cards are fine.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I assume you are shoorting JPEG. If you change to RAW you may want a bigger card.

I'm mainly shooting jpeg. I use SanDisk Extreme III UDMA 32 Gbyte cards.

Sandisk are good, so is Transcend. (look for the Sanndisk Ultra 30mb/s or Extreme 60 mb/s if you are gonna shoot video, or the Transcend 400x)

You can get a couple of 8gb cards for less than 40. The 4gb are two dollars cheaper so are not really worth it anymore. For video you may want a couple of 16gb.

I jumped from a 30D to the 7D with a 2gb card, then bought a 4gb, then an 8gb, and now im looking for a Transcend 16 or 32gb. Don't cheap out now, because it's gonna cost you more down the road.

I should have said that I always shoot RAW and probably will never shoot video.

A 2gb is only 67 RAW shots. Go at least 8gb. Sandisk Extreme/Lexar 400x

was in a pinch and Fry's only had 'silicon power' 600x CF cards in stock... used two of them all weekend long, and had zero problems. $40 for a 16gig 600x card is definitely not bad, and the 7Ds we used them in handled big bursts really well.

If you are not shooting sports or video, the ones below work fine.http://www.adorama.com …Kjhvcv33bMCFQqe4AodghAAHw (external link)

I prefer the 16 gig size.

I have a 16gb sandisk 60mb/s and a lexar 32gb 400x, both have no problems. I think the lexar loads pictures in my pc faster

Alan - I think anything smaller than 16gb is a little too inflexible for the large files the 7D produces. Speed is down to what you need but as I'm sure you'll be aware, buy reputable rather than eBay. I use MyMemory (external link) and have found them to be good value with fast turnaround. For what it's worth, I use the Kingston recommended by Scorpio a few posts above. Not the fastest but no problems in over a year's regular use in both 7D and 5D2.

I bought 2 Sandisk 16 GB Extreme cards for my 7D and they have worked very well for me. Note that Canon recommends UDMA capable memory in the owner's manual and not all cards support UDMA. Sandisk "Ultra" apparently does not support UDMA.
