This juvenile male GSW is one of four which visit our garden and this morning he allowed me to take some close up shots :) . I had to take these at ISO 8000 due to what passes for daylight here at the moment.
The last (uncropped) shot is a little tight in the frame but it holds the most detail which is why I've included it:

Beautiful shots Mark, killer backgrounds, specially on the 2nd pic. I can see we are both lucky to have same kinda weather :) Beautiful woodpecker. Do you know where they nest? :)

Thanks a lot Jo. Yes, bad weather but isn't that often the best time to see birds!
There are four of these which either live in or just outside my garden (there's a small forest on one side of where we live). The two juveniles, this being one of them, aren't quite as camera shy as their parents. If we ever get a nice day when I have an hour or two to spare I'll be looking for flight shots of them :)

Such a great set, Mark. First two are my favourites. Background, especially in #2, is beautiful!

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. This is the closest I've yet managed to get with one of these Woodpeckers. Now, if I can just get some flight shots...:)
