I somehow thought it was metal until I checked again just now. Maybe it feels cheap due to the lack of texture as we're used to on "L" plastic?  I guess cheap is too strong a word. Not as refined is more like it, although I actually like the way the older L lenses are made more than the recent ones like the 100L macro which feels pretty cheap.
