Power problems with G5

I've got a Canon Powershot G5 and am having a serious problem with the power. I was using it and it said there was a data error, or something like that. I switched it of, then on and it came on but then shut down, with the lens sticking out. I have been unable to get it to switch on or off even after removing the battery, cleaning the connections, charging it, or while it is charging. The orange light comes on when I try to turn it on but nothing else happens, the light comes on while it is charging but nothing else. I don't really understand it - any suggestions?

I did notice a similar thread dated march 2005 but it had no conclusive information. Any help gratefully revieved.

Have you also removed (or changed?) the little disc cell battery? What about trying a different memory card? The "data error" may relate to that.

Also try running it with no memory card plugged in.

I tried fiddling about with it, it started up after a time or two trying the preview mode, but came up saying 'lens' in the info display before shuttung down. I fiddled with the lens and it started up again. But the LCD display was not working at all. I'm really not sure what is going on with it now. I'll try the above suggestions and see what happens.
