Off topic, but what is Black Friday? I'm not asking about the shopping frenzy, but the naming of the day. It's the day after thanksgiving, right? Why is it called black Friday?

From Wikipedia......

Black Friday as a term has been used in multiple contexts, going back to the nineteenth century, where it was associated with a financial crisis in 1869 in the United States. The earliest known reference to "Black Friday" to refer to shopping on the day after Thanksgiving was made in a public relations newsletter from 1961 that is clear on the negative implications of the name and its origin in Philadelphia:

For downtown merchants throughout the nation, the biggest shopping days normally are the two following Thanksgiving Day. Resulting traffic jams are an irksome problem to the police and, in Philadelphia, it became customary for officers to refer to the post-Thanksgiving days as Black Friday and Black Saturday. Hardly a stimulus for good business, the problem was discussed by the merchants with their Deputy City Representative, Abe S. Rosen, one of the country's most experienced municipal PR executives. He recommended adoption of a positive approach which would convert Black Friday and Black Saturday to Big Friday and Big Saturday.[

Clark Howard, the number one consumer advocate in the U.S., recently talked about a comprehensive study on Black Friday and Cyber Monday pricing.

I think the report was done by Consumer Reports. The study charted pricing of various items throughout the year. The end result revealed that at different times of the year, sale pricing on these items matched, or even bettered, the Black Friday pricing.

The point?

That if you set up tents outside of BestBuy, or stand in line in front of any store in the cold, you are a clueless moron who is easily manipulated by the pros on Madison Avenue.

Not too dissimilar to those who stand in line for days or hours to see the latest cult movie, or not to dissimilar from the AppleBorg.

You couldn't pay me $50/hr to stand in line...

On second thought I'd do it. I'd pay my kids to stand in line for $5/hr and pocket the rest! :D

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

That's a pretty negative way to look at it. For all you know this could be the only time these kids will ever get to experience the joys of camping. ;)

Well, obviously Consumer Reports has become the DXOMark for the general populace. The study is probably faked. ;)

No way I'd camp out to do that kind of stuff either, but, I don;t think that's why they do it.
I have seen a lot of T.V. news interviews in the past of people that do this, they have the same thinking of a tail-gater, they think that is a fun time. From the people interviewed, all I saw was smiling faces, they all talk to each other, it's a good time for them, different strokes, I guess...
It's not a bad thing, you won't ever catch me at a football game, a baseball game, or any tail-gating party, but I know that a lot do that, they like it, it's a similar deal, it's a gathering of like-minded people, do what they like to do.
Really, I'm sure we all do stuff that someone things is 'stupid', I know my wife can't understand why I keep taking the same kind of birds over and over, even though I tell her it's different each time. :) :)
Just because I don't like camping at Best Buy or anywhere else doesn't make it stupid, even though I don't necessarily agree with it myself.
Still, you won't catch me doing it either! heheh

Fair enough. And to be honest I need to be careful in my judgement. I'm pretty comfortable economically so it is easy for me to value my time off on a Friday over putting in a lot of effort to save a few bucks.

I was going to say the same thing. A lot of people get paid $8-10 an hour, so spending all day to save $100 is just like a day at work. A $179 40" LCD might be their only chance at a TV like that.

But yeah, for me with my cushy upper middle-class job? I got paid more than that to stay home today and nap on the couch. No thanks on concrete camping at the strip mall.

I've never seen a $180 brand name 40" LCD advertised normally, have you? Most of these door busters at BB are in fact a very good discount from normal. On average, sale prices are not considerably lower than other sales, but people aren't camping to save $10 off a pack of socks, they are camping to get a half price TV or laptop.

I had a neighbor that waiting in line for 8 hours overnight to get a TV with his brother and although he admitted it probably wasn't worth the effort, he had a great time hanging out with family and having an adventure. He's far from a clueless moron.

The last time we did any black friday shopping, we bought a 55" LED 3D HDTV with the accompanying blu ray player and 4 extra pairs of glasses (almost 2k below regular price), we got a laptop (saved about $150), two printers (saved about 150 between them), and a few other things I can't recall at the moment. All told it was worth the effort for the savings, but we certainly weren't camping out. ;)

Right now Best Buy has another deal on a 55" 3DTV and two pairs of glasses for 1k off. I would think that would be worth waiting in line for.

No brand TVs are a good deal on black Friday. If you want a name brand TV, wait for February.

I don't know, I wouldn't call Samsung a no brand TV..........

Granted all of the 40" $200 Tv's I'm seeing are 720p. People are going to be a bit disapointed if they think they're getting a 1080p HDTV at 40" for $250 only to get home and realize they bought a 720p TV:lol:

Meh. can't even tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 40" TV unless you are 3' away.

Bestbuy one is a Toshiba.
