Fantastic lens, must be about the sharpest thing I've ever had with amazing bokeh and efficient IS. But fact is that this lens spends way too much time in my backpack instead on-camera. I just checked my lightroom collection and only about 10% are taken with this lens, and that is almost exclusively for my paid work like weddings (maybe 1 or 2 times a year). My private photos are mainly kids, family, school plays etc. And vacations, although I tend to take my NEX camera to those to keep weight down.
So I really can't justify keeping the 70-200/F2.8 and since I'm getting a nice price for it (it's in excellent condition because, well, it's never been used that much) I'm thinking about switching to a different combination. The main reason the lens stays that much in the bag is mainly due to weight. So I was thinking about completing my current setup (Canon 7D + 50mm/1.4 + 17-55/F2.8) with these lenses :
Canon EF-100L IS : never had a macro lens, and this is supposed to be very sharp. As far as I've read, it should also make for a very nice portrait lens on a crop-body.
+
Canon 70-200/F4 IS : not losing any of the reach that I had with my 70-200/F2.8, but essentially cutting weight in half, which I think will help me in putting the lens on a lot more. I lose some light-sensitivity, but for personale use I probably won't use this that much indoors too.
This combination will cost me absolutely nothing, the price I would pay for these (new) is exactly the same as what I'm getting for my 70-200/F2.8. I'm still not sure I'll need the 70-200 but it is a nice focal length to have in the bag. I might consider not buying the 70-200/F4 and just get some other gear like primes or a good flash. But for that, I could use some advice!
What do you think? Is this a sensible choice? I know the 70-200/F2.8 IS Mark II is always listed as a 'must have' lens, and I love it but I just don't use it that much because it is so heavy. I might regret selling it, but having a very expensive piece of equipment just for the sake of having it is also kinda stupid.
Wasted a lot of $ because I always thought the grass was greener elsewhere. If you don't need the f/2.8 it sounds like a good thing to do. I found I just missed the f2.8 too much.
