Sigma's new lens designations will fit into one of the following three catagories: Art, Contemporary, Sports. They will no longer use the EX designation for superior glass.

This sounds idiotic. It seems like they're trying to dumb down the designations...I prefer clear designations that, yes, require one to memorize a few things, but ones where you look at the numbers and letters on a lens and you know exactly what you have in your hand (FL, speed, type of focus motor used, whether it's FF compatible or not, if it's top of the line or not, etc)...this sounds whole "Art" thing (while the lens itself may be a top performer and certainly a beautiful design) is just plain silly.

I like how you can make AF adjustments on the lens if need be. That's a nice touch.

My apologies ended up staying at the in laws. Initial quick impressions. The lens focuses much faster than the Sigma 50 1.4 It is as quick as the 24LII and faster than the 35L. Images on the screen ( i know doesnt mean much) look very sharp and contrast looks good. Bokeh is nice and smooth (again this is subjective but i would have complained if it looked like say the Canon 50 1.4 bokeh again subjective). I should have shots up later in the day. Nothing special just quick shots of my cousin.

It's just a name -- who cares? All that matters is the quality and performance of the lens.

Did you also purchase the dock that allows you to make adjustments to the lens? This feature could eliminate the "Sigma Lottery" concern that many people have. I am really interested in reading how well it works.

Obviously, I care, because I shoot FF. Up until now, it's been fairly easy to tell which Sigma/Canon lenses would and wouldn't work on my body. Also, the current designations (such as "EX") were helpful in quickly determining which line of lenses I was looking at if it was a focal length that they made multiple versions of, or if it was an FL I wasn't overly familiar with. In recent years, the only Sigmas/Tamrons I've been interested in have been the top of the line ones...so when I'm browsing ads, I could quickly weed out the ones I wasn't interested in.

I think the designation of DG, for FF, and DC, for crop sensor, will still remain. So, you will be able to tell quickly if the lens will work on your camera. To my understanding only the EX will disappear.

That'd be good...are they ONLY going to be placing this A, S, C or whatever silliness thing on what would otherwise be EX? Or will they put it on *ALL* lenses throughout their line-up?

Yep, I may consider picking up this lens if it turns out to be fairly reliable w/ focus.

Here are some quick shots i took yesterday. Some challenging lighting in this space which was good for testing the focusing speed. All shot on a 7D at ISO 1600. These are straight out of the camera nothing applied to them besides being converted from RAW to JPEG in LR4 and uploaded to flickr.

What makes it "art" as opposed to the regular version?

It is just that: Pure ART!!!
