What would you use to join a Canon 400mm f2.8 IS to a monopod?

Nothing...

Screw the pod into the lens foot and go shoot.

A head is just one more thing that can fail at the worst possible moment.

That's what I do.

Looks like this is discontinued as I cant find it anywhere. Is there a recognised successor to this old model that has the front to back tilt feature?

If you decide to go with any kind of mount that moves... be it a ball head or one axis tilt... you need to be extremely careful. When I was shooting with a much lighter lens than the 400, I almost had a disaster a few times with these flexible heads not being secure and suddenly tilting to the limit. With the weight of a 400, it will go to the ground and/or hurt your hand trying to catch it. After a few of those, I went to the solid Arca Swiss release, and never had another problem. Its a little less convenient for shooting on different vertical planes, but that's not much of a problem with sports.

RRS LCf-51 (external link) and B2 LLR II (external link) clamp. The setup kicks butt.

I am looking to sit a I am looking to sit a Canon 400mm f2.8 IS II on a monopod for sports photography, mainly wakeboarding, american football and football.
What would you suggest to join the monopod to the lens, if anything? Would you suggest a plate of some sort or a monopod head? If so what sort/make
Thanks in advance for your recommendations

^^ My beastly 400 is set up plain & simple to a 681B monopod.

I would not screw my lens directly to the monopod. I would want a quick release system...

I would use a RRS or Kirk clamp and a RRS or Kirk plate for the tripod ring of your lens...

I would NEVER use a ball head on a monopod... Simply additional weight to be lugged...

However, for lighter weight outfits, the Kirk MPA-1 is a very decent tilt head. I use mine with my 300mm f/4L IS lens and 7D camera...

Thanks everyone for your recommendations, views, advice and experiences.

I'm still not 100% decided, so I guess the sensible thing to do is see how I get on with the lens screwed directly to the monopod, and if that doesn't work, I may go with a replacement lens foot and a screw knob clamp on the monopod, probably RRS

One last comment. I use a lever clamp on my monopod vs the screw type. Not sure which I like better. I know the clamp is locked when the lever is closed. But there is a slight possibility a strap can snag on the lever and release it, although the design makes that difficult. With the screw top it could loosen.

I think this is the one I have... http://reallyrightstuff.com …mp-w%2f-dual-mount&key=it (external link)
