Zeiss Vs Canon on 5D

I'm considering the zeiss 85/1.4 AND 35/1.4 for my Canon 5D.
I prefer manual controls so its not an issue that I won't untilize auto control functions etc. Therefore the only relevant issues are optical quality, price and build quality comparisons between the zeiss lenses mentioned and Canon alternatives. Who wins?
I need edge to edge sharpness at wide open for low-light work and large print output.
Also are zeiss fast wides in general better than canon ?
Any experiences out there? Options and further considerations?

Welcome ...

http://oomz.net/mf/ (external link) is a great source for info on Zeiss and all there seem very open minded about the relative merits of different brands.

I have three old Zeiss jobbies and I have to say I am very happy with them all but I know nothing about modern offerings. There are also several other users here so you should hopefully get some ideas. Do a search as there have been several threads. Buze is a good resource as he has good Zeiss and other glass as well as some very fine Canon stuff.

I've heard of the superb quality of Zeiss lenses...........However, how about the Canon 85 and 35 L?? They are just as good (I think).......and they have AF.

there is no comparison with Zeiss lens to Canon lens. Zeiss are just beyond what Canon can make. Leica and Zeiss comparison is definately interesting.

most of the C/Y lens are excellent, pricey... 21mm Distagon f/2.8 C/Y is around $2400-$2600. But it will out resolve the 24mm L 1.4 (even at 2.8).

Well, actually if you can deal with the size and weight issue, The 35L rates a 4, ZC 35 rates 4.3. The 85L rates 4.6 as does the ZC 85 1.4, but the 85L is a 1.2. That's what photodo says anyway. I have both the L's and although they are rather large, they are about as fine of optics I have used and both work very well in MF. Any other focal lenght and I would say go with the Zeiss, but the Canon 35 and 85 L's are hard to beat. There are a bunch of people that shoot Leica and Zeiss on the Fred Miranda Forum, so you might do well to check out their alternative digital forum.
