5DM3 - use of Flash on TV setting

Hi 5DM3 users,
I am now using the 5DM3 after trading in my 5dM2. The camera is superb especially with the fantastic ISO range. Have used it on trips to Australia and found it great.

I have found that using the 580EXII or 580 or 550 ... I can set to TV for auto flash photography at a speed of 1/200 but then the problem now is that if the lighting needs a lower speed the camera automatically flashes at that lower speed instead of the desired speed of 1/200. This speed is vital especially for events whereby flash is needed but the lighting speed has to be more than 1/60 to prevent ghosting of people moving.

The setting could be done on 5DM2 and my 1DM3.... I just want to confirm if anyone out there has the same problem. Hope CANON reads this and adjust the firmware to allow us to use TV at 1/200 setting as in the 5DM3.

I don't have a 5D3, so I'm not sure, but it sounds like you have some sort of safety shift enabled...Check your custom function settings.

Mr Mark
You are brilliant...... There is a tv/av safety switch.
It has to be disabled.... which means set to OFF.

It works now.....Thanks very much. Sometimes making some noise you get an answer.

But the better way to do this is using M mode. When you need flash, there's no point in using Tv, as you either have Safety Switch enabled, in which case you'll get a long exposure, or you don't, in which case you'll always shoot with the lens wide open.

Tv is not well suited for many occasions where a flash is needed as main light. Neither is Av. But they work fine for reasonably well lit occasions, where you just want to add some flash light for shadow fill and similar.

I have to agree, the whole effort seems pointless. Tv with flash and set to 1/200 will just hold the lens wide open. M mode would do the same thing without all this safety shift confusion.

You are too kind, but I'm glad that you got it sorted!...I agree with the others that M mode really is a better way to use flash with a constant 1/200s shutter speed...You may wish to try this out and see if it doesn't serve you better.:)
