My wife flies on business quite a bit and we got an email from Air Canada stating we had to use up quite a few points by the end of 2013.

After much thought we decided to head out to the East coast. We had memorable trips to both Newfoundland and Maine on separate trips - a long time ago before digital.

So we are taking 3 weeks and splitting it in half between those two places. Never made to Gros Morne national park last time we were on the rock. We had the best whale watching ever near St Johns. I doubt we will be as lucky this time.

Had a great time in Maine. Spent most of time in that state but visited Boston the year before they tore down the Gardens. I have been a Bruin fan for as long as I can remember. I was in awe. Now I have two teams - Jets & Bruins :D. We are going to spend most of our time around the Booth Bay Harbour area with a trip to Bar Harbour. Last time we were there it was so foggy at Acadia national park we could not see past 100 feet. I know we were on a road.

What are your plans next year? Winter - summer?

I'm not sure yet, but I'm hoping to be able to go visit a friend in Belgium in the spring, with an opportunity to see (and photograph) Bruges and Ghent, and maybe also Lille in northern France (plus my friend works in Brussels).

I also have quite a few unused Air Miles which I could use to go to Cuba.

I have a shot I've been planning for the spring that's a few hours drive...been planning it for a few years. Also look to get to some great wildflower locations next year. Possibly Canyonlands area, not sure. We shall see.

Can't afford any "trips" per se', just day trips.. or a weekend type stuff.

I'm envious of your forthcoming maritime trip.. NFLD would be awesome.. especially Gros Morne!! :)

Would love to do hit the Bay of Fundy too, for some long exposure shots.

My daughter spent the few years of her university time in Newfoundland so I was back and forth quite a bit. If you do go back the time to go to Gros Morne is time well spent. There are lots of birds and moose that are too tame for my liking. They walk within ten feet of people regularly for the couple of times that I have been there. You can take the boat trip up the lake which is nice but it is quite a walk from the interpretative center to the dock at the lake but there are lots of photo ops in between.

You don't say what your intersts are specifically but if you are into birds then NFLD is a godsend. There is Cape St. Mary's (external link) which has tens of thousands of Northern Gannets which you can get real close to. These two were taken there.

If you go in mid-June or July you can get plenty of opportunities for Altantic Puffins. Go to either Elliston or Bonavista and you can shoot them from shore. There are lots of boat tours that claim to get you close to them and I took one but it was a small boat and rough making shooting very hard. Shooting from the shore at these two places is quite doable if you have at least a 100-400. This one shot at Elliston where they have Puffin festival each July.

If you get there earlier in the year, say mid-May you have an excellent chance of getting to see lots of icebergs. This depends on how many calve off the glaciers in Greenland. One year that I was there, there weren't very many but the next summer they were everywhere. You stand even a better chance up near Gros Morne. There were some just outside the inner harbor at St. John's. I went to a small fishing community on the edge of St. John's called Quidi Vidi and dangled some cash to the fishermen who were struggling at the time and got one to take me out for a couple of hours. Although he wouldn't get as close as I would have liked (yes I know they can roll) it was still a great day.

I've been through all of the Canadian maritime provinces and Maine as well. Newfoundland is still my favorite, it really is a photographers heaven. They have wildlife, scenery and very unique architecture so you will never have to go far to find something new and interesting to shoot. Even in the middle of winter I always found something to shoot though they do have some violent snow storms there. I haven't been back for a couple of years so I may make the trip down there again.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Thanks for the helpful info Sheldon. Very nice Puffin capture. Those are fast little buggers. We really enjoyed NF last time we were there. We did the whale watching at Bay Bulls just South of St Johns. There were so many Puffins in the sky it looked like someone had thrown tons of pepper into the sky.

They must get wicked storms. We were amazed at how small and battered the trees along the shores were, particularly at Cape Spear. Looked like they were growing on a 45 degree angle away from the ocean.

Not sure, got a couple of kids finishing college. I haven't heard if they've decided to walk in the procession yet, if they do I'm sure it'll be done for us and we're expected to be there and they're not at all close to each other geographically. After that I'm sure we'll head back to Hawaii for awhile.

2013 will probably be a road trip in the Pacific NW as I am saving my money to go back to Africa in 2014........ without the wife. She is not a great animal or photography person so going back by myself will enable me to spend longer in the Serengeti in remote tented camps

Don't really have plans. I am sure I will be Hawaii a couple of times. Will be at the Northshore in two weeks for the pipeline masters. I am thinking of about heading to Zimbabwe and Limpopo, South Africa. It depends on my son, as he is graduating from college and the Africa trip is something I want to take him as a graduation present. He has always enjoyed my Africa stories and pics.

Cheers, Steve

Those are decidedly cool plans!

If you go to southern Europe, be sure to visit Slovenia; it is as nice as it is often overlooked.

That would be a nice trip. That area of Europe is on my list. Some day.
