Looks like a juv sharpie or juv cooper's. I think (s)he likes your feeder. With all the small "friends" visiting, it becomes his/her feeder too.:D

Fee said it all, but it's a win, win situation I think. For the hawk that is lol. Maybe I should put some feeders out again here at home lol.

A wonderful bird who will likely stop by on occasion to see if there are any opportunities. If you are outside and there are 0 birds and not a sound, that could be a signal that this hawk is in the area. The small birds will hide in hedges and anywhere else they think they are safe. Nice capture.

A Sharpie will only take small rodents, small birds and large insects. A Coopers is a little bigger and will take the same but could go for larger mammals like a chipmunk and perhaps a small squirrel. If your cat is an adult there should be no issue and the hawk could be the one in danger. Your kids have nothing to worry about. Another sign that one of these guys is around is if you hear crows making a racket as the crows will mob and harrass these birds into leaving the area.

what you say is exactly what has been happening around here lately.... 1st for no reason all the birds disappear and hide in the bushes.... 2nd the crows go crazy..

Welcome to the food chain! ;-)a

It looks like a Cooper's to me... you'll need to see the whole tail to make sure. A Cooper's tail tips are Curved, while a Sharpie's is Square. They're stealth bombers that come out of nowhere and eat the little birdies. Their favorite snack is Dove... yummy!

Troy you have your answer from Lazy . I would suggest The Encyclopedia of North American Birds...383 pages of Birds with photographs and a description of just about everything you want to know about them...great book. The Peterson field guide is one of the best and is a pocket book. Since you are in NY the version best for you would be A Field Guide To The Birds with the caption Eastern Land and Water Birds, This book has drawings instead of photos but coupled with the descriptions it is still the best guide I have come accross and I have five different gudes.Hope this helps.
