Just got this lens last week for a good price. Not sure about others but my copy, an used one in near new condition, has some front focusing issue at 70mm to 90mm, on a D7000. I can correct it by using +12 setting. That would just cause massive back focusing on the longer end, 155mm to 200mm. A +3 setting seems to have giving me the compromise here. 70mm at f2.8 can be soft but by f4, it gets sharp. At 200mm, it can be back focusing a bit depending on how well I can track anything that moves.

Well that +15 MFA is with the Nikon D3s
Just putted on my D7100, and guess what, it needed a -14.
Quit the opposite ???
But still from 70 to 200 mm its sharp.

Strange enough its a little bit less on exact 135mm, on F3.5 its again sharp. by 130mm and 140mm its sharp, just only on 135mm?
by the way you only see it ad 100% pixel and with the 2.8 and 3.5 next to each other.

Its just great on the D3s....

I just shot a bike race this morning...and I got some back focusing issue at the longer end, which it should not be since I have set my AF tune setting to +2, instead of +3. You can try to use LiveView Auto Focus to get a reference shot at various distances. I would start with 100ft or near the infinity. Use LiveView AF to capture the shot at 200mm f2.8. Look at your distance scale and notice where it stops. Then, use normal AF to focus. Then, use AF tune to adjust the focus until both LiveView shot and the normal AF shot are completely identical in sharpness. Do that at 20ft to 30ft distance. And finally, under 10ft. That should give you some ideas if that particular AF tune setting would cause back focusing or front focusing under 200mm depending on the distance. My theory is that the lens, with the body, would try to AF correctly until your shooting distance is changing greatly. At some point, you have to decide if you want to optimize the AF at the shorter end or the longer end....

Unless...you send the lens to Tamron for re-calibration. Too bad I can't since I bought it used....

i use fastrawviewer (external link) with the focus peaking option.
it works just great, you instantly now where the focus is.

i keep the settings that i now have, all are spot on. its just when its on F2.8 and the distance is more then lets say 25 or 30 feet, i have to set it to 3.5 or F4 and its sharp again.
its the only thing that i till now have find where the nikon vrII better in is...

Focus point is on his chest.

A shot from this past Sunday race. Is the lens weather sealed? I think I have to shoot in the rain, somewhat light, tomorrow...
