(2 edits in all) | Jun 14, 2017 22:42 | #1146 ![]() Just got this lens last week for a good price. Not sure about others but my copy, an used one in near new condition, has some front focusing issue at 70mm to 90mm, on a D7000. I can correct it by using +12 setting. That would just cause massive back focusing on the longer end, 155mm to 200mm. A +3 setting seems to have giving me the compromise here. 70mm at f2.8 can be soft but by f4, it gets sharp. At 200mm, it can be back focusing a bit depending on how well I can track anything that moves. You can try to use LiveView Auto Focus to get a reference shot at various distances. I would start with 100ft or near the infinity. Use LiveView AF to capture the shot at 200mm f2.8. Look at your distance scale and notice where it stops. Then, use normal AF to focus. Then, use AF tune to adjust the focus until both LiveView shot and the normal AF shot are completely identical in sharpness. Do that at 20ft to 30ft distance. And finally, under 10ft. That should give you some ideas if that particular AF tune setting would cause back focusing or front focusing under 200mm depending on the distance. My theory is that the lens, with the body, would try to AF correctly until your shooting distance is changing greatly. At some point, you have to decide if you want to optimize the AF at the shorter end or the longer end.... One Imaging Photography
