I don't think the a7rII is available yet. Also, why does the 40D not AF the 100-400?

I was thinking the A7 II, which is available. It has some nice specs too.

It does focus. i messed up what I meant to say, that it does not focus with a TC. The new 100-400 definitely focuses faster than it's predecessor.

I leave on my Alaska trip early Tuesday morning, and have not come up with a camera solution. I did sell a couple lenses, and bought the 100-400 II. Camera wise I have the 5DII, which is fine for landscape shots, but my 40D will not focus the 100-400. I put a reserve on the Canon 5DS R, and they are finally in transit, but will almost certainly not be here for the release date next Monday.

I was going to ask that myself! My 100-400 lens works fine with my old 30D -- the aperture when zoomed out is f/5.6, which is compatible with our DSLRs. The thing that "throws things for a loop" is to put on a teleconverter. That won't allow AF with your "standard" cameras...but the 1D cameras and at least one of the APS-C cameras can handle apertures with f-stops of up to f/8.

So if your 40D won't AF with the 100-400 (no teleconverter) then something would be amiss!

I live on my comps, all of them. First thing in the morning, turn them all on and they are the last thing to turn off at night.

Yup, turn them all off. They use more power than you think. With 4 PCs and one being a disk farm, that's about 30kwh a day and at 9 cents a kwh, that's almost $3.00 a day. Turns out to be almost $1000 a year. Yea, they get turned off.

That really seems high, as most PC's will draw 100-200 watts when in full use, except for power house gaming type PCs. Idling during the night and non-use times would be much lower if your computer is allowed to sleep.

Mind you, we now only have two desktops running now at home, as well as the Drobo backup.

Yea, the numbers are rough and I included the monitors, sound systems, various chargers, two printers and other things. I figured roughly 300w per system with the big machine pulling a bit more than that because of the drives, but even at 150w, that's $500 a year and that does not include the additional power needed to cool the house in the summer. It's like running a 600w space heater all the time. Got to get rid of the heat sometime.

In any case, I power down as much as possible each night not only for power but also for safety. I have everything on a power bar so it's easy to just flip the switch. Anyway, we get some really intense lightning storms like I've never seen back in Chicago and it has a propensity of blowing equipment. Still not fully recovered from the last storm where we lost almost $1000 worth of hardware. Looking into a whole house surge protector at the moment.

I used to just let the PC sit in sleep mode overnight but lately we've had a bunch of drunk wine tasting tourists knock down power poles and interrupting our power. If it lasts long enough the UPS alarm goes off and wakes me up. Now I just shut it completely down at night.

JJ - if I had your lightning storms I'd shut mine off during the day too.

EDIT. By the way I found one of these power meters (external link) very useful.

It's amazing how much power all these little wall warts and things like the cable tv box consume when you add it all up. The meter paid for itself in the first month.
