I can't get our company website up outside the building. I'm stumped! Everything looks correct but it doesn't work.

Physically being inside or outside makes a difference? What if you bring it up on your phone/tablet and then go stand in a doorway with one foot out and one inside? :)

Not the wireless. Our actual website disappeared last week from the web while I was on vacation. Everything internally looks correct, and nothing has changed. I'm stumped as to why it's not being found on the web. :(

You checked different external DNS servers?

External DNS, Firewall, server IP or web application filter; one of those things changed.

Check your firewall to see what the public and private IP addresses should be for the web server. If they aren't correct the traffic won't get routed from the Internet to your webserver. If they are correct do a DNS lookup outside of your network and see if the DNS IP address matches the public IP address on the firewall. If all the prior are correct then check your webserver to see if there's a host-based firewall, IPS or filter installed and try disabling it. I have also seen some antivirus software that filters incoming ports so an antivirus update might even be the culprit.

Got my power meters last night and hooked one to the entertainment center and one to my computer area. Interesting preliminary data. Seems out entertainment center costs us about 1 cent and hour while operating and 1/2 cent an hour when the tv is off. DVR/Cable box and router cost us about 12 cents a day or $43 a year. My computers, all turned off still cost 1/2 cents an hour. Not sure what the heck is using the power. Monitor in idle, pc turned off. Laptop off but plugged into docking station. Maybe the speakers and various chargers use more than I thought.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

It's only a couple hours but the whole setup uses much less than I thought. I'd like to put the monitor on the old TV as well. I suspect that the new LED one uses much less power. I know it is much cooler.

Tomight I'm going to do some light bulb testing. 3 40w incandescent and 4 40w LED. See if our switch to LED was worth the cost and effort.

I too would imagine it is much lower consumption. Interesting to hear all your findings.

I bought two so I can do side by side testing.

My PC draws about 40 watts on standby and when it and the monitor are up and running they draw about 280 watts. My IPS monitor on standby draws 26 watts. I haven't tried to figure out the dollars and cents because we're currently on a 3 tiered electric rate system where the lowest rate is 14 cents per khw and the highest rate is 33 cents per kwh.

When I checked my 7 watt LEDs I found that the string of 5 lamps drew 38 watts. I suspect the extra 3 watts is loss in the low voltage transformer that feeds that string of LEDs. I didn't bother putting the 50 watt halogens back in for comparison, so I'll be interested to see what you find out in your side by side comparison.

Yo. I don't think I've been here before. At least I don't recognize the smell. Except for Chet.

Hi Moose,

Wow Tim, those are high rates. I'm not sure what our actual kwh is but I took 6 months of bills, looked at what we paid and divided by # of kwhs used. It comes to 10.8 cents per kwh. I have to check my meters tonight as I think I may have mis-programmed them. When I read it this morning my turned off PCs used 2 kw overnight and about 2 kw per hour when running. That seems high to me.

Yes we have very high rates. I almost cried when my brother in Houston told me what he pays for his electric power. No wonder he can afford to live in Hot Texas and run his A/C.

I found one 12volt wall wart that powers a ham radio antenna tuner sucking up 0.9 kwh a day. It's now on a power strip that gets shut off when the radios are off. That $8/month at the highest cost tier.

My goal at this point is to find these little power users like that.

Have you ever done a count of all the wall warts you have in your house? Most homes have a bunch of these that are left plugged in all the time. It adds up.

They are all over the place and start adding up. I was surprised that my turned off computer desk still consumed 2kwh over night. It's only 20 cents but still, I though it would be zero.

BTW, my 10.8 cents per kwh includes fees and taxes as well. It's what we really pay not what they charge us per kwh. We got this stupid round up program. If your bill is $50.01, you pay $51.00. Never have figured out that logic. My math teacher always taught me that from .01 to .49 you round down and from .50 to .99 you round up. That would make more sense.

I'd like to know how much those plug in air freshener/wax melter/aerosol sprayer things draw. We don't use any, other than a potpourri thing on special occasions, but I know a lot of people who are obsessed with them.
