Spotted this one in the back yard a few days ago, this was right before he ate one of the small squirrels I like to watch  Am I correct in thinking this is a Red Tail Hawk?

Nice shot.

Don't think it's a red-tail, since, well, it doesn't have a red tail. Beyond that I have no idea, there's 4 or 5 species it could be.

After a Google Image search it could be a Cooper's, Broad Winged or Short tailed. I'm sure some of the other "eagle eyed" posters here will have a more definite idea. And it just may be a red tailed simply because I said it wasn't.

Well this being a juvenile hawk we'll compare it to juveniles of similar species. Juvenile Coopers would have a yellow eye. This eye looks brown to me so there is an easy elimination. Juvenile Red-tailed would have much narrower bands on the tail. Broad-winged would have a bold malar and paler supercillium than this one. That and the fact that they should all be gone from the north by this time. That leaves Red-shouldered....which it is. Nice shots too, Tammy.

Regards,
Chuck
